Men of faith have been lost, who came with the power of their deeds: mighty ones to stand in the breach, who repel the decrees. They were a wall for us, and a shelter on the day of wrath: they extinguish anger with their whisper, they restrain fury with their cry. Before they called to You, You answered them; they know how to entreat and to appease You. Like a father You had compassion for their sake; You did not turn their faces away empty. Through the abundance of our iniquities we have lost them; they were gathered in from us through our sins. They have journeyed to their resting places; they have left us to sighs. Gone are the menders of the fence; cut off are those who turn back wrath. There are none who rise in the breach, worthy to appease You with prayer. We have wandered through the four corners; a remedy we have not found. We have returned to You in the shame of our faces, to seek You early, O God, in the time of our distress:

God, King Who sits upon the throne of mercy, and acts with lovingkindness, Who pardons the iniquities of His people, removing them one by one, Who abounds in forgiveness for sinners and pardon for transgressors, Who performs acts of righteousness with all flesh and spirit—not according to their wickedness does He requite them. God, You taught us to recite the Thirteen Attributes; remember for us today the covenant of the Thirteen Attributes, as You made known to the humble one of old, as it is written: And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and He proclaimed the Name of the Lord:
