So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, "Go, serve the Lord your God! Who are the ones that are going?" Moses said, "We will go with our young and with our old; with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds we will go, for we must hold a festival to the Lord." He said to them, "May the Lord be with you if I ever let you and your little ones go! Look, you have some evil purpose in mind. No! Go now, you men, and serve the Lord, for that is what you want." And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

When Pharaoh sent the people out, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although it was nearer; for God said, "The people may have a change of heart when they see war, and return to Egypt." So God led the people around by way of the wilderness toward the Sea of Reeds. The Israelites went up out of the land of Egypt armed for battle. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the Israelites swear, saying, "God will surely take notice of you, and then you must carry up my bones from here with you." They set out from Succoth and encamped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to guide them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel day and night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: "Speak to the children of Israel and let them turn back and encamp before Pi-hachiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon; you shall encamp opposite it, by the sea. Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, 'They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has closed in on them.' Then I will stiffen Pharaoh's heart and he will pursue them, so that I may gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord." And they did so.

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have released Israel from serving us?" He ordered his chariot and took his people with him. He took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. The Lord stiffened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel, as the children of Israel were departing defiantly.

Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after she had been sent home, and her two sons, of whom one was named Gershom, for he said, "I have been a stranger in a foreign land," and the other was named Eliezer, for "the God of my father was my help, and He delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh."

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God. He sent word to Moses, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you, with your wife and her two sons with her." Moses went out to meet his father-in-law; he bowed low and kissed him; each asked after the other's welfare, and they went into the tent. Moses then recounted to his father-in-law everything that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardships that had befallen them on the way, and how the Lord had delivered them.

Jethro rejoiced over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered from the Egyptians. Jethro said, "Blessed be the Lord, who delivered you from the Egyptians and from Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, yes, by the result of their very schemes against the people." And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to partake of the meal before God with Moses' father-in-law.

These are the rules that you shall set before them: When you acquire a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years; in the seventh year he shall go free, without payment. If he came single, he shall leave single; if he had a wife, his wife shall leave with him. If his master gave him a wife, and she has borne him children, the wife and her children shall belong to the master, and he shall leave alone. But if the slave declares, "I love my master, and my wife and children: I do not wish to go free," his master shall take him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his slave for life.

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do. If she proves to be displeasing to her master, who designated her for himself, he must let her be redeemed; he shall not have the right to sell her to outsiders, since he broke faith with her. And if he designated her for his son, he shall deal with her as is the practice with free maidens. If he marries another, he must not withhold from this one her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights. If he fails her in these three ways, she shall go free, without payment.

He who fatally strikes a man shall be put to death. If he did not do it by design, but it came about by an act of God, I will assign you a place to which he can flee. When a man schemes against another and kills him treacherously, you shall take him from My very altar to be put to death. He who strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death. He who kidnaps a man—whether he has sold him or is still holding him—shall be put to death. He who insults his father or his mother shall be put to death. When men quarrel and one strikes the other with stone or fist, and he does not die but has to take to his bed—if he then gets up and walks outdoors upon his staff, the assailant shall go unpunished, except that he must pay for his idleness and his cure.

They shall make an ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold—overlay it inside and out—and make upon it a gold molding round about. Cast four gold rings for it, to be attached to its four feet, two rings on one of its side walls and two on the other. Make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold; then insert the poles into the rings on the side walls of the ark, for carrying the ark. The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark: they shall not be removed from it. And deposit in the Ark the Pact which I will give you.
