לֹא תֹסִפוּן לִרְאוֹת פָּנָי: וַיְהִי כִּי עָלִינוּ אֶל־
עַבְדְּךָ אָבִי וַנַּגֶּד־לוֹ אֵת דִּבְרֵי אֲדֹנִי:

English
to your servants, 'If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you shall not see my face again.' When we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

Our father said, "Go back, buy us a little food." We said, "We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down, for we cannot see the man's face if our youngest brother is not with us." Your servant my father said to us, "You know that my wife bore me two sons. One went out from me, and I said, 'Surely he has been torn to pieces,' and I have not seen him until now. If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my gray hairs in misfortune to the grave." And now, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, and his soul is bound up with the lad's soul.

Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years. The time drew near for Israel to die, and he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please place your hand under my thigh and deal with me kindly and truly: please do not bury me in Egypt. When I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place." He said, "I will do as you have said." He said, "Swear to me," and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed at the head of the bed.

After these things, someone said to Joseph, "Behold, your father is ill." He took his two sons with him, Menasheh and Ephraim. Jacob was told, "Behold, your son Joseph has come to you," and Israel strengthened himself and sat up on the bed. Jacob said to Joseph, "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.

He said to me, "Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a congregation of peoples, and I will give this land to your offspring after you as an everlasting possession." The children that you beget after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died on me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath—that is Bethlehem." Israel saw Joseph's sons and said, "Who are these?" Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God has given me here." He said, "Please bring them to me, and I will bless them."

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; each man and his household came: Reuven, Shimon, Levi, and Judah; Yissachar, Zevulun, and Binyamin; Dan and Naftali, Gad and Asher. All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy persons, and Joseph was in Egypt. Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. The children of Israel were fruitful and swarmed and multiplied and became very, very strong, and the land was filled with them.

A new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. He said to his people, "Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass that when war occurs, they too will join our enemies and fight against us and go up from the land." They set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens, and they built store cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses. But as they afflicted them, so they multiplied and so they spread, and they were disgusted because of the children of Israel.

The Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel with crushing labor. They made their lives bitter with hard work in mortar and bricks and with all field labor; all their work that they performed for them was with crushing labor. The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shifrah and the name of the other Puah, "When you deliver the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him, but if it is a girl, let her live." But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they kept the boys alive.

God spoke to Moses and said to him, "I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by My name the Lord I was not known to them. Therefore, say to the children of Israel: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. I will take you to Me as a people, and I will be to you a God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of Egypt. I will bring you to the land that I raised My hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you as a heritage—I am the Lord." Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of shortness of spirit and hard bondage.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Go, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land." Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, "Behold, the children of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, when I am of uncircumcised lips?" The Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a charge to the children of Israel and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

לְמַעַן שִׁתִי אֹתֹתַי אֵלֶּה בְּקִרְבּוֹ: וּלְמַעַן תְּסַפֵּר

The Lord said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may place these signs of Mine in his midst, and that you may tell in the ears of your son and your son's son how I made a mockery of Egypt, and My signs that I placed among them—that you may know that I am the Lord." Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says the Lord, God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

For if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
