Jacob went out from Be'er Sheva and went toward Charan. He encountered the place and lodged there, for the sun had set; he took from the stones of the place and put them at his head, and lay down in that place. And behold, the Lord was standing over him, and He said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land upon which you are lying, to you will I give it and to your seed. Your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread westward and eastward and northward and southward, and through you shall all the families of the earth be blessed, and through your seed. And behold, I am with you, and I will guard you wherever you go, and I will return you to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken to you." Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Indeed, the Lord is in this place, and I did not know." He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of the heavens."

Jacob arose early in the morning and took the stone that he had put at his head, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on its top. He called the name of that place Beit-El, though Luz was the name of the city at first. Jacob vowed a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will guard me on this way that I am going, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, and I return in peace to my father's house, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be a house of God, and of all that You give me I will surely tithe a tenth to You."

Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. I have oxen and donkeys, flocks, and manservants and maidservants, and I have sent to tell my lord, to find favor in your eyes."

The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is also coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him." Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and the cattle and the camels, into two camps. He said, "If Esau comes to the one camp and strikes it, then the remaining camp shall be for escape."

Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. His brothers said to him, "Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed rule over us?" And they hated him yet more for his dreams and for his words. He dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Behold, I have dreamed a dream again, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." He told it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? He slept and dreamed a second time, and behold, seven ears of grain came up on one stalk, fat and good. And behold, seven ears, thin and blasted by the east wind, sprouted after them. The thin ears swallowed up the seven fat and full ears; and Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

It was in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men, and Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was none who could interpret them for Pharaoh. The chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, "My sins I mention today: Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the chief of the guards, me and the chief baker. We dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; each according to the interpretation of his dream we dreamed. And there with us was a Hebrew youth, a servant of the chief of the guards, and we told him, and he interpreted for us our dreams; each according to his dream he interpreted. And it was, as he interpreted for us, so it was: me he restored to my post, and him he hanged." Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they rushed him from the dungeon; he shaved and changed his garments, and came to Pharaoh.
