And the Lord said to Abram: Go forth from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, and you shall be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed through you.

And Abram went as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Charan. And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had acquired, and the people they had made in Charan, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan, and they came to the land of Canaan. And Abram passed through the land as far as the place of Shechem, as far as the oak of Moreh; and the Canaanite was then in the land.

And the Lord appeared to Abram and said: To your offspring I will give this land. And he built there an altar to the Lord who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and he built there an altar to the Lord and called in the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on, continually traveling toward the Negev. And there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. And it was when he drew near to enter Egypt that he said to Sarai his wife: Behold now, I know that you are a woman of beautiful appearance. And it will be, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife,' and they will kill me but let you live. Say, please, that you are my sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared on your account.

And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of the tent in the heat of the day. And he lifted his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing over him; and he saw, and he ran toward them from the entrance of the tent, and he bowed down to the ground. And he said: My lords, if I have found favor in your eyes, please do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and recline under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, and sustain your hearts; afterward you may pass on—since you have passed by your servant. And they said: Do so, as you have spoken.

And Abraham hurried to the tent, to Sarah, and said: Quickly, three seahs of fine flour; knead and make cakes. And Abraham ran to the cattle and took a tender and good calf and gave it to the servant boy, and he hurried to prepare it. And he took butter and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood over them under the tree, and they ate.

And they said to him: Where is Sarah your wife? And he said: Behold, in the tent. And he said: I will surely return to you at this season next year, and behold, a son will be born to Sarah your wife. And Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years; the way of women had ceased for Sarah. And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: After I have withered, shall I have pleasure—and my lord is old? And the Lord said to Abraham: Why is it that Sarah laughed, saying, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am old?' Is anything too wondrous for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this season next year, and Sarah will have a son.

And the life of Sarah was one hundred years and twenty years and seven years—the years of Sarah's life. And Sarah died in Kiryat Arba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to eulogize Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham arose

from before his dead, and he spoke to the children of Chet, saying: I am a sojourner and a resident among you; give me a burial holding among you, that I may bury my dead from before me. And the children of Chet answered Abraham, saying to him: Hear us, my lord; you are a prince of God in our midst. In the choicest of our burial places bury your dead; none of us will withhold his burial place from you, from burying your dead. And Abraham arose and bowed to the people of the land, to the children of Chet.

And he spoke with them, saying: If it is your will that I bury my dead from before me, hear me and intercede for me with Efron son of Tzochar, that he may give me the cave of Machpelah that is his, which is at the edge of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in your midst as a burial holding. Now Efron was sitting among the children of Chet, and Efron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Chet, of all who entered the gate of his city, saying: No, my lord, hear me: the field I give you, and the cave that is in it—to you I give it; in the sight of the children of my people I give it to you; bury your dead. And Abraham bowed before the people of the land.

And he spoke to Efron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying: But if only you would hear me: I give the price of the field; take it from me, that I may bury my dead there. And Efron answered Abraham, saying to him: My lord, hear me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead. And Abraham listened to Efron, and Abraham weighed out for Efron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the children of Chet—four hundred shekels of silver, current among the merchants.

And these are the generations of Isaac son of Abraham: Abraham begot Isaac. And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan Aram, sister of Laban the Aramean, as a wife. And Isaac entreated the Lord opposite his wife, for she was barren; and the Lord was entreated of him, and Rebecca his wife conceived. And the children struggled together within her, and she said: If so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of the Lord.

And the boys grew up, and Esau was a man who knew hunting, a man of the field, and Jacob was a wholesome man, dwelling in tents. And Isaac loved Esau because game was in his mouth, and Rebecca loved Jacob. And Jacob cooked a stew, and Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob: Pour into me, please, some of this red, red stuff, for I am exhausted—therefore they called his name Edom. And Jacob said: Sell me as of this day your birthright. And Esau said: Behold, I am going to die; so of what use is a birthright to me? And Jacob said: Swear to me as of this day. And he swore to him, and he sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and arose and went; and Esau despised the birthright. And there was a famine in the land, aside from the first famine that was in the days of Abraham; and Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar. And the Lord appeared to him and said: Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land that I will tell you. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath
