Moses came down from the mountain and called for the elders of the nation and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him to tell them. The entire Jewish Nation replied in unison and said, "All that the Lord has spoken we shall do!" The next morning, on the third day of Sivan, Moses went back up the mountain and brought back the words of the nation to the Lord. The Lord said to Moses: Behold, I will come to you from within the thickness of the cloud, so that the nation will hear when I speak to you, thus they will also believe in you and all future prophets, forever. However, when the Jewish Nation heard this, they responded, "We want to hear the commandments directly from God, not through a messenger." And so, the next morning—on the fourth of Sivan—Moses went back up the mountain and relayed the words of the nation to the Lord. The Lord said to Moses: Go to the nation and prepare them by sanctifying them today, the fourth, and tomorrow, the fifth of Sivan, and they shall wash and purify their garments so they will be worthy of witnessing the great revelation. They shall be prepared for the third day—the sixth of Sivan—for on the third day, the Lord will descend onto Mount Sinai before the eyes of the entire nation. You shall set a border for the nation around Mount Sinai and you will tell them, "Watch yourselves, beware of going up on the mountain or even touching its edge, because the mountain will be holy during the revelation at the giving of the Torah, and anyone who touches the mountain shall surely die. No hand shall touch it, for if someone touches it—whether man or animal—he shall not live, first he will be cast down from the stoning platform and then he will be stoned. the ram's horn sounds a long, drawn out blast, they may once again go up on the mountain."

Moses descended from the mountain and went to the nation to tell them everything that God had told him. He prepared the nation, and they washed and purified their garments. He said to the nation, "Be prepared for the third day from now; do not come near a woman." And it was on the third day of preparation, as it became morning, there were claps of thunder and flashes of lightning; an extremely thick cloud was upon the mountain, and a very powerful blast of a shofar was heard—and the entire nation in the encampment trembled. Moses brought the people out of the encampment toward the Divine Presence of God, which was present on Mount Sinai, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. The entire Mount Sinai was full of smoke, because the Lord had descended upon it in fire; its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the entire mountain trembled very much. The sound of the shofar grew progressively stronger and louder. After the Jewish Nation heard the first two commandments directly from God, they felt they could no longer bear such great revelation and asked that Moses convey the rest of the commandments. God gave him strength so that his voice could be heard by everyone.

The Divine Presence of the Lord descended upon Mount Sinai to the top of the mountain; the Lord called for Moses to come up to the top of the mountain and Moses went up. The Lord said to Moses: Go down and warn the nation, lest they break their positions and ascend the mountain because of their great desire to come close to God and to see His revelation, and many of them will fall. The noble—the firstborn who were designated to come near to the Lord and perform His service—should not rely on their important status; they shall also prepare themselves to stay in their designated place on the mountain, lest the Lord make a breach among them and kill them. Moses said to the Lord: I have no reason to warn them, because the nation already knows that they cannot go up to Mount Sinai, since You have already warned us, saying, "Set borders for the mountain and sanctify it." The Lord said to him: Go down and warn them once more. Then you shall ascend to the top of the mountain, and Aaron shall ascend with you only up until the point where he is permitted to go. The noble—the firstborn—shall ascend to their designated area on the mountain, and the rest of the nation, who are not permitted to go up the mountain at all, shall take care not to break their positions to go up the mountain to the Lord, lest the Lord breach and kill them. Moses went down to the nation and said to them all that God had told him.

God spoke all of these words—all of the Ten Commandments—in one utterance and then repeated each one individually, saying: I am the Lord, your God, Who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall not have what others consider to be gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a graven figure or any image of that which is in the heavens above, that which is on the earth below, or anything that is in the water below the earth.
