יִקְרֵיהּ מַטִּיל עֲלַהּ בְּיוֹמֵי וּלֵילָוָתָא,
גְּנוּנֵיהּ לְמֶעְבַּד בַּהּ בְּתַשְׁבְּחָן
כְּלִילָתָא.

Sephardi

Yiqreh matil alah b'yomei u'leilavata,
G'nunei l'me'vad bah b'tashb'chan
k'lilata.

English

His Divine Presence will rest upon Jerusalem, and protect it both day and night. He will build His canopy, the Holy Temple, in Jerusalem, as a crowning glory for the Jewish Nation.

דְּזִיהוֹר עֲנָנַיָּא לְמִשְׁפַּר כִּילְתָא,
לְפוּמֵיהּ דַּעֲבַדְתָּא עֲבִידָן מְטַלְּלְתָא.

Sephardi

D'zihor ananya l'mishpar kilta,
l'fumeih d'avadta avidan m'talleta.

English

His shining clouds will beautify the canopy. Each person's tent—his level of appreciation of the Divine Presence—will be made according to his deeds during the time of exile.

בְּתַכְתְּקֵי דְּהַב פִּיזָא וְשִׁבַע מַעֲלָתָא
תְּחֵימִין צַדִּיקֵי קֳדָם רַב פָּעֳלָתָא.

Sephardi

B'tachtekei d'hav piza v'sheva ma'alata
T'cheimin tzadikei kodam rav pa'alata.

English

On thrones of pure gold with seven steps the righteous will be placed in front of God, the great Creator.

וְרִיוְיְהוֹן דָּמֵי לִשְׂבַעָא חֶדְוְתָא,
רְקִיעָא בְּזִיהוֹרֵיהּ וְכוֹכְבֵי זִיוְתָא.

Sephardi

V'rivyeihon damei lisva'a chedvata,
R'ki'a b'zihoreih v'chochvei zivata.

English

Their appearance will be like someone who is filled with joy, their brightness will be like that of the sky and their glow will be like that of the stars.

הִדְרָא דְּלָא אֶפְשַׁר לְמִפְרַט
בְּשִׂפְוָתָא, וְלָא אִשְׁתְּמַע וְחָמֵי נְבִיאָן
חֶזְוְתָא.

Sephardi

Hidra d'lo efshar limfrat
b'sifvata, ve-la ishtema v'chamei nevi'an
chezvata.

English

Their beauty will be a beauty that cannot be described with lips; and that no prophet has ever heard of or seen in a vision.

בְּלָא שָׁלְטָא בֵּיהּ עַיִן, בְּגוֹ עֵדֶן גִּנְּתָא,
מְטַיְלֵי בֵּי חִנְגָּא לְבַהֲדֵי דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא.

B'lo shalta beih ayin, bego eden ginta,
M'taylei bei chinga l'vahadei dishchinta.

English

No eye has seen the greatest parts within the Garden of Eden—not even Adam and Eve—but that is where the righteous will walk and dance together with the Divine Presence.

עֲלֵיהּ רָמְזֵי דֵּין הוּא, בְּרַם
בְּאֶמְתָּנוּתָא, שְׂבַרְנָא לֵיהּ בְּשִׁבְיָן,
תְּקוֹף הֵימָנוּתָא.

Sephardi

Aleih ramzei dein hu, b'ram
b'emtanuta, s'varna leih b'shivyan,
t'kof heimanuta.

English

In awe and fear, they will point to God and say: It is He for whom we hoped with great faith while we were in captivity in exile.

יְדַבֵּר לָן עָלְמִין עָלְמִין מִדַּמְוָתָא,
מְנָת דִּילָן דְּמִלְּקַדְמִין פָּרֵשׁ
בְּאַרְמוּתָא.

Y'daber lan almin almin midamvata,
M'nat dilan d'milkadmin paresh
b'armuta.

English

God will lead us forever, and we will be happy, like young joyous girls. He will grant us the portion that He raised up and set aside for us long ago.

טְלוּלָא דִּלְוְיָתָן וְתוֹר טוּר רָמוּתָא,
וְחַד בְּחַד כִּי סָבִיךְ וְעָבֵד קְרָבוּתָא.

Sephardi

T'lula dilvyatan v'tor tur ramuta,
V'chad b'chad ki savich v'oved k'ravuta.

English

There will be amusement with the Leviathan, and the Wild Ox, which comes from the high mountains. When they interlock with each other in combat—

בְּקַרְנוֹהִי מְנַגַּח בְּהֵמוֹת בִּרְבוּתָא,
יְקַרְטַע נוּן לְקִבְלֵיהּ בְּצִיצוֹי
בִּגְבָרְתָא.

B'karnohi m'nagach b'hemot birvuta,
Y'karta nun l'kivleih b'tzitzoi
bigvarta.

English

the mighty Wild Ox goring with its horns, and the monstrous Leviathan fish charging fiercely with its fins.

מְקָרֵב לֵיהּ בָּרְיֵהּ בְּחַרְבֵּיהּ רַבְרְבָוָתָא,
אֲרִסְטוֹן לְצַדִּיקֵי יְתַקֵּן וְשֵׁרוּתָא.

Sephardi

M'karev leih bareih b'charbeih ravrvata,
Ariston l'tzadikei y'taken v'sheiruta.

English

God, Who is their Creator, will approach them with His mighty sword, and prepare a banquet and meal for the righteous.

מְסַחֲרִין עֲלֵי תַּכֵּי דְּכַדְכֹד וְגוּמַרְתָּא,
נְגִידִין קַמֵּיהוֹן אֲפַרְסְמוֹן נַהֲרָתָא.

Sephardi

M'sacharin alei takei d'chadchod v'gumarta,
N'gidin kameihon afarsemon n'harata.

English

The righteous will sit around tables of gems and precious stones; there will be rivers of the fragrant spice balsam flowing before them.

וּמִתְפַּנְּקִין וְרָווֹ בְּכַסֵּי רְוָיְתָא, חֲמַר
מָרַת דְּמִבְּרֵאשִׁית נְטִיר בֵּי נַעֲוָתָא.

Sephardi

Umitpankin v'ravo b'kasei r'vayata, chamar
marat d'mibreishit netir bei na'avata.

English

They will enjoy and satisfy themselves from overflowing cups of old, delicious wine that was preserved in vats from the time of Creation.

זַכָּאִין, כַּד שְׁמַעְתּוּן שְׁבַח דָּא
שִׁירָתָא, קְבִיעִין כֵּן תֶּהֱווֹן בְּהַנְהוּ
חֲבוּרָתָא.

Sephardi

Zaka'in, kad sh'ma'tun shevach da
shirata, k'vi'in ken tehevon b'hanhu
chavurata.

English

Just as you—those listening—have been privileged to hear this song of praise, so should you always be in that holy company of the righteous who will enjoy these delights in the Garden of Eden.

וְתִזְכּוּן דִּי תֵיתְבוּן בְּעִלָּא דָּרְתָא, אֲרֵי
תְּצִיתוּן לְמִלּוֹי, דְּנָפְקִין בְּהַדְרָתָא.

Sephardi

V'tizkun di teit'vun b'ila darta, arei
t'zitu l'miloi, d'nofkin b'hadrata.

English

And you should merit to sit in the highest row among the righteous, because you have listened to my words expressing God's glory.

מְרוֹמָם הוּא אֱלָהִין בְּקַדְמָא
וּבַתְרָיְתָא, צְבִי וְאִתְרְעִי בָן וּמְסַר
לָן אוֹרָיְתָא.

M'romam hu Elohin b'kadma

English

God, who desired and loved us and gave us the Torah, is exalted from the beginning to the end of all existence.

FIRST DAY OF SHAVUOT

In the following reading, the Jews prepared for the giving of the Torah and heard the Ten Commandments from God at Mount Sinai, the anniversary of which coincides with the first day of Shavuot.

English

On the first day of the third month from when the Children of Israel left Egypt—the month of Sivan—it was on this day that they came to the Sinai desert. They traveled from Refidim and came to the Sinai desert and encamped there in the desert. All of the Children of Israel encamped there opposite the mountain—Mount Sinai—as a unified nation. The next morning, on the second day of Sivan, Moses went up the mountain to speak with God. The Lord called to him from the mountain instructing him to speak to the Jewish Nation: Say the following to the women of the House of Jacob, and tell it to the men, the Sons of Israel: You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians because of the way they treated you. I carried and protected you like an eagle carries its young on its wings so that no predator can hurt them, and I brought you close to Me so that you should serve Me. Now, if you listen well to My voice, observe My commandments, and keep My covenant—the Torah that I will teach you—you shall be a treasure for Me, chosen from among all the other nations, for although the entire world belongs to Me, only you have been chosen to be My treasure and all the rest are worthless in My eyes. And you shall be a kingdom of nobles and a holy nation for Me. These are the words that you shall speak to the Children of Israel.
