אַקְדָמוּת

טְפֵי יַקִּידִין שְׂרָפִין, כְּלוּל גַּפֵּי
שִׁתָּא, טַעֲם עַד יִתְיַהַב לְהוֹן
שְׁתִיקִין בְּאַדְשְׁתָּא.

Sephardi

T'fei yakidin s'rafin, k'lul gapei
shita, ta'am ad yityahav l'hon
shtikin b'adshta.

English

More numerous than those angels are the fiery angels, called the Serafim, who each have six wings. They are silent and quiet until the Jewish Nation finishes praising God, at which point permission is given to them to sing praises as well.

יְקַבְּלוּן דֵּין מִן דֵּין שָׁוֵי דְּלָא
בַשְׁשְׁתָּא, יַקֵּר מָלֵי כָּל אַרְעָא,
לִתְלוֹתֵי קַדְשְׁתָּא.

Sephardi

Y'kablun dein min dein shavei d'lo
vashshta, yaker malei kol ar'a,
lit'lotei kadshta.

English

They also receive permission from each other to praise God, following which they say together without delay, “God is holy” three times, and then they proclaim that God's glory fills the entire earth.

כְּקַל מִן קֳדָם שַׁדַּי כְּקַל מֵי
נְפִישׁוּתָא, כְּרוּבִין קֳבֵל גַּלְגַּלִּין
מְרוֹמְמִין בְּאוּשְׁתָּא.

Sephardi

K'kal min kodam Shaddai k'kal mei
n'fishuta, k'ruvin kovel galgalin
m'rom'min b'ushta.

English

Then, like a mighty sound from before the Almighty, like the roar of rushing water, the Cherubim angels face the Ofanim angels and rise up in a thundering noise

לְמֶחֱזֵי בְּאַנְפָּא עֵין כְּוַת גִּירֵי
קַשְׁתָּא, לְכָל אֲתַר דְּמִשְׁתַּלְּחִין,
זְרִיזִין בְּאַשְׁוָתָא.

Sephardi

L'mechezei b'anpa ein k'vat girei
kashta, lechol atar d'mishtalchin,
z'rizin b'ashvata.

English

to see the glory of God. They travel as fast as an arrow shot from a bow, as they go quickly and excitedly to every place they are sent.

מְבָרְכִין בְּרִיךְ יְקָרֵיהּ בְּכָל לִשָּׁן
לַחִישׁוּתָא, מֵאֲתַר בֵּית שְׁכִינְתֵּהּ,
דְּלָא צְרִיךְ בְּחִישׁוּתָא.

Sephardi

M'varchin berich y'karei bechol lishan
lachishuta, mei'atar beit shechinteh,
d'lo tzarich b'chishuta.

English

In every spoken language they bless God and say, “Blessed be His glory from the place of His Divine Presence,” which is everywhere and therefore does not need to be searched for.

בַּחֲשַׁשְׁתָּא, נְהִירָא מַלְכוּתֵיהּ,
לְדָר וָדָר לְאַפְרָשְׁתָּא.

Sephardi

Nahim kol cheil m'roma, m'kalsin
bachashashta, n'hira malchutei,
l'dar vadar l'afrashta.

English

All the heavenly armies raise their voices to praise Him with great awe; the radiance of His kingdom is declared from generation to generation.

סְדִירָא בְּהוֹן קַדְשְׁתָּא, וְכַד
חָלְפָא שַׁעְתָּא, סְיוּמָא דִלְעָלַם,
וְאוֹף לָא לַשְּׁבוּעָתָא.

Sephardi

S'dira b'hon kadshta, v'chad
chalfa shata, s'yuma dil'alam,
v'of la lashvu'ata.

English

They say their prepared praises of God's holiness, but when their time has passed, they vanish forever and will not sing again. Even in the seventh millennium—after the Resurrection of the Dead, they will not return because their reason for being has already been fulfilled.

עֲדַב יַקָּר אַחְסַנְתֵּיהּ חֲבִיבִין
דְּבַקְבַּעְתָּא עָבְדִין לֵיהּ חֲטִיבָה
בִּדְנַח וּשְׁקַעְתָּא.

Sephardi

Adav yakar achsanteih chavivin
d'vakva'ta ovdin leih chativah
bidnach ushka'ta.

English

However, the Children of Israel, God's precious portion and possession, are always beloved by Him, and will proclaim His unity every morning and night forever, because they will never cease to exist.

פְּרִישָׁן לְמַנָּתֵיהּ, לְמֶעֱבַד לֵיהּ
רְעוּתָא, פְּרִישׁוּתֵיהּ שַׁבְּחִיהּ
יַחֲווֹן בְּשַׁעֲוָתָא.

Sephardi

P'rishan l'manteih, l'me'evad leih
r'uta, p'rishutei shabcheih
yachavun b'sha'avata.

English

God has separated the Jewish Nation as His portion, chosen to do His will; they declare His wondrous praise at the proper time, evening, morning, and afternoon.

צְבֵי וְחָמֵיד וְרָגֵיג דְּיִלְאוּן
בְּלָעוּתָא, צְלוֹתְהוֹן בְּכֵן מְקַבֵּל
וְהַנְיָא בָּעוּתָא.

Sephardi

Tz'vei v'chameid v'rageig d'yila'un
b'la'uta, tz'lotehon b'chen mekabel
v'hanya ba'uta.

English

God wants, desires, and wills that the Children of Israel should work hard in their study of Torah, which will cause their prayers to be accepted and their requests to be effective.

קְטִירָא לְחֵי עָלְמָא בִּתְנָא
בִּשְׁבוּעָתָא, קֳבֵל יְקָר טוּטְפְתָא
יְתִיבָא בְּקַבִּיעֲוָתָא.

Sephardi

K'tira lechei alma bitna
bishvu'ata, kovel yekar tutafta
y'tiva b'kabi'avata.

English

Through the covenant that God, Who lives forever, made with us, the praises are woven into His crown, and set permanently near His glorious tefillin.

רְשִׁימָא הִיא גּוּפָא בְּחָכְמְתָא
וּבְדַעְתָּא, רְבוּתְהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, קָרָאֵי
בִּשְׁמַעְתָּא.

Sephardi

R'shima hi gufa b'chochm'ta
uvda'ta, r'vutehon d'Yisrael, kara'ei
bishma'ta.

English

In the tefillin it is written—with wisdom and with knowledge— the greatness of the Children of Israel, who say the Shema and proclaim God's Oneness.

שְׁבַח רִבּוֹן עָלְמָא, אֲמִירָא דְכַוָּתָא,
שַׁפִּיר עֲלַי לְחַוּוֹיֵהּ, בְּאַפֵּי מַלְכְּוָתָא.

Sephardi

Sh'vach ribbon alma, amira d'chavata,
shapir alai l'chavoyei, b'apei malch'vata.

English

This praise of the Master of the world is a statement of purity that is proper for me to declare in the presence of the kings of the nations of the world.

תָּאִין וּמִתְכַּנְשִׁין כַּחֲזֵי אֲדוּתָא,
תַּמְהִין וְשָׁיְלִין לַהּ בְּעֵסֶק אֲתָוָתָא.

Sephardi

Ta'in umitkanshin kachazei aduta,
tamhin v'shaylin lah b'esek atavata.

English

The many nations of the world come and gather together like the many waves of the sea. They wonder and question about the signs and proofs that God watches over the Children of Israel and will send the Redemption.

מָנָן וּמֵאָן הוּא רְחִימָךְ, שַׁפִּירָא
בְּרְיוּתָא, אֲרוּם בְּגִינֵיהּ סְפִית מְדוֹר
אֲרָיוָתָא.

Sephardi

Manan ume'an hu r'chimach, shapira
biryuta, arum b'ginei s'fit m'dor
aryavata.

English

They ask, “Beautiful Jewish Nation—who and from where is your beloved God, for Whom you are tortured and thrown into the lions' den?

יַקְּרָא וְיָאֶה אַתְּ, אִין תְּעָרְבִי
לִמְרָוָתָא, רְעוּתָךְ נַעֲבֵיד לִיךְ, בְּכָל
אֲתַרְוָתָא.

Sephardi

Yak'ra v'ya'eh at, in t'arvi
limravata, r'utach na'aveid lich, bechol
atarvata.

English

You will be glorious and precious if you agree to be assimilated under our authority. We will fulfill your wishes, wherever you may be, if you will only just listen to us.”

Hebrew

בְּחָכְמְתָא מְתִיבְתָּא לְהוֹן קְצָת
לְהוֹדָעוּתָא, יְדַעְתּוּן חַכְּמִין לֵיהּ
בְּאִשְׁתְּמוֹדָעוּתָא.

Sephardi

B'chochm'ta m'tivta l'hon k'tzat
l'hoda'uta, y'da'tun chachmin leih
b'ishtamoda'uta.

English

The Children of Israel respond with wisdom, by letting them know just a portion of God's greatness, because it is impossible to describe all of His praises. They say, “If you would only know and recognize Him, you would acknowledge His greatness.

רְבוּתְכוֹן מָה חֲשִׁיבָא קֳבֵל הַהִיא
שַׁבַּחְתָּא, רְבוּתָא דְּיַעֲבֵד לִי, כַּד
מָטְיָא יְשׁוּעָתָא.

Sephardi

R'vut'chon mah chashiva kovel hahi
shabachta, r'vuta d'ya'aved li, kad
matya y'shu'ata.

English

What is your greatness worth in comparison with the glory and great things that God will do for me when my salvation comes,

בְּמֵיתֵי לִי נְהוֹרָא, וְתִחְפֵּי לְכוֹן
בַּהְתָּא, יְקָרֵיהּ כַּד יִתְגְּלֵי בְּתָקְפָּא
וּבְגֵיוָתָא.

Sephardi

B'meitei li n'hora, v'tichpei l'chon
bahta, y'karei kad yitgalei b'takpa
uvgeivata.

English

when His light will come to me and you will be covered with shame?” When God's glory will be revealed in all its might and power,

Hebrew

יְשַׁלֵּם גֻּמְלַיָּא לְסָנְאַי וְנִגְוָתָא,
צִדְקְתָא לְעַם חֲבִיב וְסַגִּיא זְכוּתָא.

Sephardi

Y'shalem gumlaya l'san'ai v'nigvata,
tzidk'ta le'am chaviv v'sagi'a z'chuta.

English

He will repay His enemies for their evil deeds, even those who live in faraway islands, and He will give righteousness to the Children of Israel, the beloved nation that has many merits.

חֶדְוָ שְׁלָמָא בְּמֵיתֵיהּ וּמְנֵי דַכְוָתָא,
קִרְיְתָא דִירוּשְׁלֵם כַּד יִכְנֹשׁ גָּלְוָתָא.

Sephardi

Chedva shelama b'meitei um'nei dachvata,
kiryata diYerushalem kad yichnosh galvata.

English

There will be perfect joy and pure delight when He comes to the city of Jerusalem, when He gathers those who are exiled.
