שְׁאוֹל סַבֻּנִי קִדְּמֻנִי מֹקְשֵׁי
מָוֶת: בַּצַּר־לִי אֶקְרָא יְהוָה

the waters of a raging river, torrents of evil people frightened me. Groups of evil people surrounded me, weapons of death confronted me. In my distress I called out to the Lord—I called out in prayer to my God. He heard my voice from His chamber in Heaven, and my cry reached His ears. He saved me just as He saved the Jewish Nation in the past. The earth shuddered and trembled, the rulers of Canaan, who tried to rise up like the foundations of the heavens, shook; they trembled in fear when God's anger flared. It was as if smoke rose up in His nostrils in anger, the decree of His mouth caused fire to consume the wicked, and burning coals blazed forth from Him. He bent the heavens and descended to punish Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and the thick darkness was prepared under His feet ready to be used against them. His retribution rode upon angels and swooped down; His might appeared upon the swift wings of the wind to drown the enemy. He spread darkness around Him as shelters to protect the Children of Israel from the Egyptians who were pursuing them; the darkness was from the gathered rain water in the thick clouds of the skies. From the bright light that is before Him, flaming coals fell upon the Egyptians and burned them. The Lord thundered at them from the Heavens, and God, the Most High, gave forth His thunderous sound of hailstones and flaming coals. He sent forth punishment like swift arrows and He scattered them. He sent forth lightning against them and they became confused. When the Sea of Reeds was split, the depths of the sea became visible—all the waters of the world split, and the earth's foundations were revealed by the Lord's rebuke of the Egyptians and by the strong blast of the breath of His nostrils. God sent forth His help from on high and took me from the hand of my enemies; He drew me out from the many waters of the sea. He saved me from my mighty enemy; from those who hated me when they overpowered me. They tried to confront and attack me on the day of my wandering, but the Lord was a support for me. He brought me out of the narrow confines into a broad space; He released me because He desires that which is good for me. The Lord rewarded me—the Jewish Nation—according to my righteousness in following Him into the desert and relying on His promise of deliverance. He repaid me according to the purity of my hands, for I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not acted wickedly by departing from the commandments of my God. questioning His ways, and I guarded myself from sin. The Lord repaid me according to my righteousness and according to my purity before His eyes. With the descendants of the devout one—Abraham—You act kindly; with the descendants of the strong one, complete in his awe of You—Isaac—You act complete in fulfilling Your promises, and You chose the descendants of the pure one—Jacob—to be Your nation and purified them. With the corrupt one—Pharaoh—You acted crookedly, by twisting and confusing the Egyptians when You drowned them in the sea. You save the humble Jewish Nation, and Your eyes are set upon the haughty until You lower them. For You, Lord, are my light and the light of the Jewish Nation, and in my troubled times the Lord lights up my darkness. For with Your help, I can break the battalions of my enemies, and with the assistance of my God, I jump over walls to conquer the fortified cities of my enemies. He is the God Whose way is perfect and fair. The word of the Lord is pure—He keeps His promises. He is a protective shield for all who take refuge in Him. For who is a capable power besides the Lord—who can stand up against Him and stop Him from fulfilling His promises? And who is a rock besides our God? He is the God Who strengthens me with might, and He sets my way to be perfect without any obstacles or sins to block my path. He makes my feet swift as those of a deer to be able to chase my enemies, and He set me to stand upon my secure heights. He trained my hands in the art of war and gave my arms the strength to bend a copper bow. You gave me the shield of Your salvation, and in Your humility You watched over me, and You made me appear to the enemy as if there were many people with me, when, in fact, I was with very few. You have widened my footsteps beneath me so that my ankles should not easily fall. I chased my enemies and destroyed them, and I did not turn back until they were completely eradicated. I destroyed them, and I struck them down so that they did not rise up again; they fell under my feet. You, God, have girded me with strength for battle, and You have made those who rise up against me to kneel and fall beneath me. You gave my enemies into my hands—they were forced to turn away and flee; I caught up with those who hate me, and I cut them down. They cried out to their idols, but there was no savior for them. Then, out of desperation, they prayed to the Lord, but He did not answer them for they were insincere. There was no one to save them, because they prayed out of fear and not out of true repentance from their wicked ways. I ground them like the dust of the earth; I trampled them like the mud in the
