camped in Eitam, which is situated at the edge of the desert. The Lord would go before them, appearing by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them on the right path, and by night in a pillar of fire to lead them and to illuminate the way for them, so that they could travel both by day and night. God did not remove the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire at night from before the nation until the next pillar was visible.

On the third day of their travels, the Lord spoke to Moses and told him to tell the Jewish Nation: Speak to the Children of Israel and tell them to turn back and encamp before the city of Pitom, which is now called Pi Hachirot, between Migdol and the sea, in front of the idol Ba'al Tzephon; you shall encamp opposite it, near the sea. Pharaoh will think the Children of Israel have lost their way, and he will say about them, "They are lost in the land, the desert has closed them in." I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them but will fail to catch up to them. Through the punishment that I will give to Pharaoh and his entire force, I will be glorified by the rest of the world, and the Egyptians will finally know that I am the Lord. Moses relayed this to the Jewish Nation and they did just as the Lord said.

On the fourth day, with the Jews having still not returned from "their three day trip to the desert," it was related to Pharaoh that the nation had fled. Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart regarding the Jewish Nation, and they said, "What is this that we have done to ourselves that we have sent away the Children of Israel from serving us?" The next day, Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and took his nation with him to chase after the Jews. He took six hundred select chariots as well as all the rest of the chariots of Egypt, pulled by the horses that survived the plagues. And he took officers over it all. Pharaoh was still unsure as to whether he should chase after the Jews or not, so the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the Children of Israel. All this, while the Children of Israel were going out with a high hand—triumphantly.

The Egyptians chased after them, and on the sixth day, all of Pharaoh's horses and chariots, his horsemen, and his foot soldiers caught up to them where they were encamped near the sea, near Pi Hachirot, in front of Ba'al Tzephon. Pharaoh brought himself close to the Jews by hurrying in front of his people. The Children of Israel

raised their eyes, and behold! The Egyptians were all chasing after them in unison. They were very frightened, and so the Children of Israel cried out to the Lord in prayer. As the Egyptians continued to come closer, the Jewish Nation said to Moses, "Is it because there are no burial grounds in Egypt that you have taken us to die in the desert? What is this that you have done to us by taking us out of Egypt? Isn't this the very thing that we spoke to you about in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us, and we will stay in Egypt and continue to serve the Egyptians, for it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the desert?'" Moses said in answer to the people, "Don't fear. Stand strong and see the Lord's salvation that He will do for you today. For although you have seen the Egyptians today, you will not see them alive ever again. The Lord will fight on your behalf and you shall remain silent."

Moses went to the Lord on behalf of the Jewish Nation, and the Lord said to Moses, "Why do you cry out to Me? Now is not a time for prayer; rather, speak to the Children of Israel and tell them that they should travel on toward the Sea of Reeds. And you, Moses, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and split it. And the Children of Israel will come into the midst of the sea on dry land. Behold! I shall toughen the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will come after them into the sea, and I will be glorified because of the punishment that I will bring upon Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians will also know that I am the Lord, when I will be glorified because of Pharaoh and his chariots and horsemen." The angel of God, who had been going in front of the camp of the Children of Israel moved and went behind them to protect them from the arrows and stones of the Egyptians. When it became dark and the pillar of fire was visible before the camp, the pillar of cloud did not disappear as it usually did at night; instead, it moved from in front of them and stood behind them to darken the way for the Egyptians. The cloud came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of the Children of Israel. For the Egyptians there was the darkness of the cloud and an additional thickness of darkness, and for the Jewish Nation there was a pillar
