Josiah put an end to the pagan priests whom the kings of Judah had put in charge of burning incense on the pagan altars in the cities of Judah and the environs of Jerusalem, as well as those people who burnt incense to Ba'al, to the sun, to the moon, to the constellations, and to all the hosts of the heavens. He took the Asherah tree out of the Holy Temple—the House of the Lord—and brought it outside of Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley. In the Kidron Valley, he burned it and ground it into dust, and he threw its dust on the graves of the people of the nation who had worshipped idols. He destroyed the places in the House of the Lord that had been designated as places where the women would weave curtains for the Asherah. He brought all of the Kohanim from the cities of Judah and helped them return to God, and he defiled the pagan altars on which the pagan priests had burned incense for idols, from the city of Geba and as far as the city of Beersheba. He destroyed the altars at the gates, including the one at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which was located on one's left when entering the gate of the city. However, the Kohanim who had served as pagan priests and offered incense on these altars were not allowed to go up upon the altar of the Lord to offer sacrifices in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, but they were permitted to eat of the matzot—the flour-offerings—as well as the meat of the animal-offerings among their brethren Kohanim. Following the cleansing of the land of all idols, the king commanded all of the Jewish Nation, saying, "Offer the Pesach-offering to the Lord, your God, just as it is written in this book of the covenant—the Torah." For throughout all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, the Pesach-offering had not been brought by such a large majority of the Jewish Nation since the days of the Judges who judged Israel. Only in the eighteenth year of King Josiah was a Pesach-offering like this offered to the Lord, in Jerusalem. Josiah also got rid of those who divine through corpses and those who divine by the Jidoa bone and those who divine through images and all of the idols and all other abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did all this in order to uphold the words of the Torah that were written in the Torah scroll that Hilkiah the high priest found
