shall celebrate and it shall be a joyous festival before the Lord for seven days. The first and the eighth day shall be a day of rest, and no work may be done on those days. And on the first day of Sukkot you shall take for yourselves and briefly hold a fruit of the beautiful citron tree, a date-palm branch whose leaves have not yet spread, three branches of the myrtle bush whose leaf pattern resembles a woven rope, and two willows of the stream, and you shall rejoice for seven days before the Lord, your God. And you shall celebrate it every year as a festival by bringing festive sacrifices to the Lord for seven days. It shall be an everlasting law and apply for all generations—you shall celebrate it during the seventh month. You shall live in temporary dwellings called sukkot for the duration of these seven days. Every member of the Children of Israel shall dwell in these sukkot. So that your future generations will know that I settled the Children of Israel in similar huts, as well as symbolic huts—the clouds of Glory—when I took them out of the land of Egypt and led them through the desert. I am the Lord, your God, Who took you out of Egypt. After Moses finished receiving the instructions, he told the laws of the Lord's festival days to the Children of Israel.

HAFTARAH FOR SECOND DAY OF PESACH

During the reign of King Josiah of the House of David, the Jewish Nation were engaged in idol worship. In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah decided to renovate the Holy Temple. During the renovation, they found one of the Torah scrolls written by Moses and it was rolled to the section in the book of Deuteronomy that speaks of the punishments that God warned He will bring upon the Jewish Nation if they will not follow His ways. King Josiah took this as a warning that the people must return to the Lord. The following Haftarah relates that King Josiah read the above mentioned portion of the Torah to the Jewish Nation, and that they repented and cleaned the Holy Temple of all impure items that had been placed there by the previous wicked kings. It also speaks about the king's reminder to the people to bring the Pesach-offering in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

King Josiah sent for the elders of Judah and Jerusalem, and they all gathered together before him. The king went up to the Holy Temple, the house of the Lord, and all the men of distinction of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went with him, as well as the Kohanim, the prophets, and all the people, from small to great. There he read aloud for them to hear all the words of the Book of the covenant—the words of rebuke that are written in the part of the Torah to which the Torah scroll that was found in the house of the Lord had been rolled. The king stood on the designated podium and reaffirmed the covenant before the Lord, to follow in the ways of the Lord and to observe His commandments, testimonies, and statutes with all their heart and soul, and to uphold the words of this covenant, which are written in this book. All of the nation stood and accepted the covenant with a verbal and internal commitment. The king commanded Hilkiah the High Priest, the Kohanim who were second to the high priest, and the guards in charge of taking care of the Temple to remove from the Temple of the Lord anything that was made for the worship of Ba'al and Asherah or for the worship of all the host of the heavens. They did as he said and they burned them outside Jerusalem, in the plains of Kidron, and they carried their ashes to Bethel and disposed of them there.
