As the Jewish Nation camped at the Jordan River before crossing it into the Land of Israel, Joshua said to the nation: Prepare yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders in your midst. The next day, Joshua spoke to the priests, saying: Until now the Levites carried the Ark; however, today you will carry the Ark of the Covenant and pass before the nation. And so they carried the Ark of the Covenant and went before the nation. The Lord said to Joshua: This day I will begin to make you great in the eyes of all of the descendants of Israel, so that they will know that just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you. At that time the Lord said to Joshua: Make sharp knives for yourself and, once again, circumcise all of the males among the Children of Israel who had not been circumcised during the forty years that the nation was in the desert, a second time—just as this was done forty years earlier, before the nation went out of Egypt. And so Joshua made sharp knives for himself and circumcised the Children of Israel at the Hill of Aralot. This is the reason why Joshua needed to circumcise the nation at this time: all of the people who left Egypt—the males, the men of war—had died in the desert during the forty years when the nation was traveling on the way to the Land of Israel, after they left Egypt. For all the people who left Egypt were circumcised. But all the people who were born in the desert when they were traveling on the way after they left Egypt were not yet circumcised, because it would have been dangerous to do so while they were in the desert. For the Children of Israel traveled in the desert for forty years, until all the men of the nation who were of age to be men of war when they left Egypt had all died, those who did not listen to the voice of the Lord, about whom the Lord had sworn not to show them the land that the Lord had sworn to their forefathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. He raised up their children in their stead, and it was they whom Joshua circumcised, for they were uncircumcised because their parents did not circumcise them while they were traveling on the way. It was when all the males of the nation were finished being circumcised; they remained in their places
