gathering. You may not do any work on this day, and you shall bring a fire-offering to the Lord. The Lord spoke to Moses and instructed him to tell the Jewish Nation about Yom Kippur, saying: However, contrary to all other festivals, which are celebrated with festive meals, on the tenth day of the seventh month is the Day of Atonement, it shall be a day of holy gathering for you; you shall afflict yourselves by fasting, and you shall bring a fire-offering to the Lord. You may not do any work on this very day, because it is a Day of Atonement, established to atone for your misdeeds before the Lord, your God. For any individual who will intentionally not fast on this very day shall be cut off from his people by dying early and childless. And any individual who does any intentional work on this very day, I will similarly destroy that individual from among his people. Do not do any work on this day; this is an everlasting law and applies to all your future generations, in all your settlements. It shall be a day of rest for you, and you shall afflict yourselves by fasting. On the ninth of the month in the evening, from before sunset—the beginning of the tenth—you shall refrain from eating or drinking, and from that evening until the following evening you shall rest on your day of rest.

The Lord spoke to Moses and instructed him to tell the Jewish Nation about Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret, saying: Speak to the Children of Israel, saying: Beginning on the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Sukkot before the Lord for a period of seven days. The first day of Sukkot shall be a day of holy gathering, you may not do any work. On each of the seven days you shall bring a fire-offering to the Lord. The eighth day shall be a day of holy gathering for you, and you shall bring a fire-offering to the Lord. It is a day of restraint—you may not do any work. These are the set festival days that the Lord commands you to pronounce as days of holy gathering. On these days you shall bring an additional fire-offering to the Lord, which includes a burnt-offering, a flour-offering, a peace-offering, and their accompanying wine offering. The specified required offerings of each day shall be offered on its designated day. These offerings are in addition to and besides the daily burnt-offerings brought on every weekday and on the Lord's days of rest, besides your personal gift offerings, besides the offerings brought for all the vows you made, and

besides all your voluntary offerings that you will give to the Lord. However, unlike the previous festival—Yom Kippur—which is serious and reflective in nature, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the season when you typically bring in the harvest of the Land of Israel, you shall celebrate and it shall be a joyous festival before the Lord for seven days. The first and the eighth day shall be a day of rest, and no work may be done on those days. And on the first day of Sukkot you shall take for yourselves and briefly hold a fruit of the beautiful citron tree, a date-palm branch whose leaves have not yet spread, three branches of the myrtle bush whose leaf pattern resembles a woven rope, and two willows of the stream, and you shall rejoice for seven days before the Lord, your God. And you shall celebrate it every year as a festival by bringing festive sacrifices to the Lord for seven days. It shall be an everlasting law and apply for all generations—you shall celebrate it during the seventh month. You shall live in temporary dwellings called sukkot for the duration of these seven days. Every member of the Children of Israel shall dwell in these sukkot. So that your future generations will know that I settled the Children of Israel in similar huts, as well as symbolic huts—the clouds of Glory—when I took them out of the land of Egypt and led them through the desert. I am the Lord, your God, Who took you out of Egypt. After Moses finished receiving the instructions, he told the laws of the Lord's festival days to the Children of Israel.

On the fifteenth day of the seventh month—the month of Tishrei—there should be a holy gathering for you. You should not do any work, and you should celebrate the festival for the Lord for seven days. You shall bring the following animals as a burnt-offering, to be completely consumed by fire; they will make a pleasing smell for the Lord: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs that are less than a year old; they should be unblemished.
