who are His devoted ones and His servants, and with the songs of Your servant King David, found in Psalms. We will praise You now, Lord, our God, with praises and songs in the verses of praise. We will make Your name great, we will praise You, glorify You, and call You King. We will mention Your name, our King and our God. God, You are the only One; You are the life of all the worlds, our King. Your great name is praised and glorified forever and ever. מִזְמוֹר The following is a song that is sung by a person who brings a thanksgiving-offering to thank God for a miracle He has done. When God does a miracle, all the nations of the earth sing to the Lord with joy. Serve the Lord and fulfill His commandments happily. Come to Him singing songs of joy. Know that the Lord is God and that He will reward us for our good deeds. Know that He created us and we are His; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. God takes care of us as a shepherd takes care of his sheep. Come, go through His gates, the gates of the Holy Temple, with a thanksgiving-offering. Bring an offering to thank God for His miracles. Come to His courtyards, the courtyards of the Holy Temple, with praise. Give thanks to Him and bless His name, because the Lord is good. He rules the universe with His everlasting kindness and with His trustworthiness; He is trustworthy to run the world according to the laws of nature, causing the sun to rise and set each day and so on, for all generations.

יְהִי May the Lord's glory last forever.1 May the Lord always be happy with His works of creation. May the Lord's name be blessed by all creations, now and forever. From the people who live in the east where the sun rises, to the people who live in the west where it sets—the Lord's name is praised by all of them. The Lord is exalted above all nations. God's glory is above the heavens. Lord, Your name is everlasting. Lord, Your name is remembered forever, throughout all generations. The Lord has set up His throne in heaven,2 and His kingdom rules over everything. When the Redemption arrives, the heavens will be happy, the earth will rejoice, and the nations will say, "The Lord has always been King!" The Lord is King, the Lord was always King, and the Lord will always be King, forever and ever. The Lord is King forever and ever. Nations have disappeared from earth, God's land. The Lord has canceled the evil ideas of the nations who wanted to harm the Jewish Nation; He has ruined the evil plans of the nations. There are many thoughts in the heart of a person—a person might think that he knows best, but only the advice of the Lord lasts forever. The Lord's advice lasts forever;3 the thoughts and plans that are in His heart are carried out throughout all generations. For He spoke, and the universe came into being; He commanded that the universe should exist, and it has continued to exist forever.4

Commentary

1 Alternatively, "to the world." It is our hope that God's "glory"—His Divine Presence—be revealed to the world for all to see. The latter part of this verse, "May God be happy," hints at the way we can achieve this revelation: by serving God with a spirit of happiness, in a way that emulates His own happiness.

2 A throne allows a king to lower himself and sit "eye to eye" with his subjects. God's "throne" symbolizes the Torah. By "lowering" His infinite wisdom and expressing it in the Torah, in terms and concepts that the human mind can understand, God made it possible for us to relate to Him and connect to Him.

3 A person's thoughts and plans may change rapidly, depending on the circumstances. A single idea can become "many thoughts," and even opposing thoughts, in a matter of moments. God's thoughts, by contrast, are eternal and unchanging—they "last forever."

4 Although God spoke and the universe came into being, it did not "stand firm" until He "commanded" us to do good deeds.
