fear. The Lord caused the people in the desert of Kadesh (Sinai) to tremble. Praise God for all the fruit that the earth has given us, and for all the blessings that You, God, our God, will bless us. God, You are the only and uplifted God. We ask You to turn to Your nation, the Jewish Nation, which always remembers Your holiness. The Lord is fair in all His ways, and He is kind in everything He does.

At the conclusion of the Hakafah, the gabbai calls out: עַד כָּאן הַקָּפָה ו׳.

its commandments can never be taken away. They are sweeter than honey and the drippings of a honeycomb.1 Eating too much honey may harm you, but learning Torah and keeping its commandments is always good for you. The Lord's voice frightens wicked people, who were standing steadfast as female deer, and destroys His enemies as if clearing forests of their trees. Everyone who comes to the Holy Temple will say that they have seen God's glory. Just as the Lord sat as king at the time of the Flood of Noah, the Lord will sit as king forever.2 The Lord will give strength to the Jewish Nation, His people. The Lord will bless His people with peace. God will bless us, because of our trust in Him. All nations—including those in the farthest corners of the earth—will fear Him. They will realize that only those who fear God are blessed. God, Who knows all secrets, accept our pleading and listen to our cry. The following special things belong to You, Lord: greatness, strength, glory, victory, and majesty.3 All of these came from You, because everything in heaven and on earth is Yours. The ability to rule as a king belongs to You, Lord, and You have given kings the power to rule over their kingdoms. You are raised above all other rulers. The Lord will be King over the entire earth. On that day, when the Redemption arrives, the Lord will be One, and His name will be One. In Your Torah it is written as follows: Every Jew should listen and understand that the Lord is our God, and that the Lord is the one and only ruler

Commentary

1 Although we may not feel pleasure when doing a commandment, we should not be discouraged. On the contrary: our inability to experience pleasure is an indication that the pleasure is too great for our physical bodies to feel—greater than simple delights like the sweetness of “honey and the drippings of a honeycomb.”

2 The word לְעוֹלָם can be translated as “to the world.” When the verse describes God as “sitting” as king, it is referring to the fact that God lowers Himself, so to speak, “to the world,” in order to create it and rule over it. This is because God’s essence (Atzmus) is infinitely higher than the world.

3 This verse refers to different periods of world history: גְּדוּלָה refers to the act of creation, which revealed God’s greatness; הַגְּבוּרָה refers to the Jewish Nation’s redemption from Egypt, because that demonstrated God’s might; הַתִּפְאֶרֶת refers to the Torah, because beauty is achieved by making peace, and the Torah was given to bring peace and unity to the world; הַנֵּצַח, translated as “the victory,” can also mean “forever.” This refers to Jerusalem and the Holy Temple (which is הַהוֹד—God’s glory) that will last forever in the era of the Redemption.
