A commandment of the Lord is bright. It lights up the way for a person's eyes to see. As happened at the giving of the Torah, the voice of the Lord breaks nations that think they are mighty as cedar trees;1 the Lord breaks those who think they are as mighty as the cedar trees of Lebanon. He makes them tremble and jump like a calf. He makes the mountains of Lebanon and Sirion jump from fear like a young wild ox. Nations will be happy and sing with joy, because they will realize that You judge nations fairly and that You will help and guide the nations on earth forever. Bless them with livelihood; make their hearts and minds pure. With the mercy of Your righteousness, always reward them. God, let us be satisfied by the pleasantness of Your right hand forever.

At the conclusion of the Hakafah, the gabbai calls out: עַד כָּאן הַקָּפָה ד׳.

FIFTH HAKAFAH

Fear of the Lord helps a person stay pure by avoiding sin, and it lasts forever. As happened at the giving of the Torah, the voice of the Lord strikes with flames of fire—lightning. The nations will praise You, God; all the nations will praise You. Powerful and Holy God—lead Your congregation, the Jewish Nation, with Your great goodness. Lord, our Master—how strong is Your name! Your strength is known on the entire earth. You have put Your majesty in the heavens.

At the conclusion of the Hakafah, the gabbai calls out: עַד כָּאן הַקָּפָה ה׳.

SIXTH HAKAFAH

The Lord's rules are true.2 They fit together and do not contradict each other. The voice of the Lord makes people living in the desert tremble with

Commentary

1 "The voice of God" refers to the sounds we make during Torah study. These sounds have the power to "break cedar trees," corresponding to our strong materialistic desires, as well as "the cedar trees of Lebanon," corresponding to the self-pride we may feel during Torah study. When we shatter these negative traits, God arouses within us a feeling of great love and rejoicing beyond reason—"to dance like a calf."

2 God's justice is called אֱמֶת. The word אֱמֶת comprises the first, middle, and last letter of the Alef Bet. Whenever God makes a judgment, there are angels on the right (corresponding to letters Alef to Mem) stating their view, and angels on the left (corresponding to letters Mem to Saf) stating theirs. Both sides debate the issue and reach a consensus (corresponding to the letter Mem) before a final true judgment (אֱמֶת) is handed down.
