Commentary

1 The difficulties that we encounter when serving God are expressions of God’s Gevurah. However, He also gives us strength (זְרוֹעַ) to help us overcome His Gevurah (עִם גְּבוּרָה) so that we may serve Him properly.

2 The reason why God conducts Himself with Gevurah (תָּעֹז יָדְךָ) is solely to “raise” and reveal the kindness that comes from His “right hand” (תָּרוּם יְמִינֶךָ). Gevurah ensures that God’s kindness is not given for free but is only shown to those who, due to their devotion to Him, are deserving of the kindness.

3 A city wall serves to protect from enemies on the outside, and also prevents inhabitants on the inside from leaving. The Torah, too, is called a “wall.” It surrounds a person, protecting him from the evil inclination who tries to attack, and restrains a person from going out and partaking in unnecessary pleasure.

4 The word בָּרָה (clear and transparent) can also refer to humility. Whereas the moon was haughty and asked God to make one luminary smaller than the other, the sun did not feel threatened by the existence of another luminary. Furthermore, the Midrash says that the sun does not want to rise, to prevent people from worshiping it as a god. This illustrates the humility of the sun and why it deserves the description “clear.”

5 In the context of learning Torah, “exile” refers to traveling to a place of Torah study (as it says in Pirkei Avot: exile yourself to a place of Torah learning), and “sent away” refers to following the path way of Torah, which is to suffice with eating bread and salt and drinking water as the mishnah in Pirkei Avot tells us.
