ERUV TAVSHILIN

Whenever a festival falls upon Thursday and Friday, or Friday together with Shabbat, we prepare an Eruv Tavshilin on the day preceding the festival. This enables us to ready food Friday for Shabbat—ordinarily forbidden on festival days.

When preparing an Eruv Tavshilin, take bread (or matzah) together with a substantial cooked food (such as meat, fish, or an egg) set aside for eating on Shabbat, and recite the blessing and statement below.

Though every household ought to have its own Eruv Tavshilin, anyone who neglected to prepare one may depend upon their rabbi's Eruv Tavshilin, prepared for the whole community.

Even while preparing one's own Eruv Tavshilin, it is preferable to designate an adult male as an agent representing the entire community, so as to include it in the Eruv Tavshilin. Absent an agent, skip the first line below.

He who makes the Eruv Tavshilin holds the food items and recites:

The agent receives the food items and food and lifts them a tefach (approximately 3 inches) and thereafter restores them to the one preparing the Eruv Tavshilin.

The person preparing the Eruv Tavshilin takes hold of the food items and recites as follows:

Once designated as an Eruv Tavshilin, the food items should be set aside and consumed on Shabbat.

ERUV CHATZEROT

An Eruv Chatzerot is prepared so as to unite several houses that open onto one enclosed area. This permits us to carry between dwellings on Shabbat—ordinarily forbidden. Practice is to gather matzah from every household on Erev Pesach and appoint it the Eruv Chatzerot covering every Shabbat of that year.

The person preparing the Eruv Chatzerot gives the matzah to an agent, who lifts it a tefach (approximately 3 inches). The person preparing the Eruv Chatzerot then receives the matzah back and recites as follows:

ERUV TECHUMIN

An Eruv Techumin is prepared so that one may walk more than 2000 amot (slightly more than 3000 ft.) past the city limits—ordinarily forbidden on Shabbat and festivals.

When preparing an Eruv Techumin, temporary residency must be established outside the city by placing food for two meals there, within 2000 amot of the city limits, before the Shabbat or festival. From that place you may then walk 2000 amot in whichever direction you wish.

All who are in the city and know that the Eruv exists prior to the onset of the Shabbat or festival may make use of the Eruv Techumin.

Because the laws for calculating city limits are quite involved, one should always consult a rabbi when preparing an Eruv Techumin.
