Kiddush For Shabbat Day

How to read the transliterations

When you arrive at the words עַל כֵּן, below, grasp the cup with the right hand. Look at the illustration, page 956. Those hearing Kiddush should answer אָמֵן as shown.

On Chol Hamoed Sukkot, when reciting Kiddush within the sukkah, append the blessing that follows.

While uttering the words לֵישֵׁב בַּסֻּכָּה, glance at the s'chach (the sukkah covering).

While seated, drink at least 2 ounces of the wine.

Wash your hands before eating bread: Once you have confirmed that your hands are wholly clean, take a filled cup of water with the right hand and transfer it to the left hand. Apply water three times to the right hand, thereafter three times to the left hand, drenching the whole hand as far as the wrist on every pour.

Once washed, press your hands together and recite the blessing of עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם on page 165, then dry your hands and remain silent until after saying הַמּוֹצִיא and eating the bread.

Prior to reciting the blessing over the two loaves of bread, lightly score (but do not cut) one of them with your knife. Grasp both loaves in your hands,⁴ recite the blessing, then slice a piece and eat it.

Should others be present at the meal who are not reciting a blessing over their own two loaves of bread, they ought to hear your blessing and receive a piece from your bread. Custom has them recite the bread blessing upon their own piece prior to eating it.

Set salt upon the table and, prior to eating, dip the morsel of bread in the salt. The Torah requires that salt accompany every sacrifice, and we commemorate this law by keeping salt upon the table, likened to an altar. Per kabbalah, dip that morsel of bread into the salt three times.

Commentary

1 Our focus during the week is on conquering the desires of the evil inclination. On Shabbat, however, we are elevated above the desires of the evil inclination. Our focus is therefore not on "working" on the evil inclination but rather on the enjoyable pursuit of contemplating God's greatness.

2 Great levels of holiness are revealed on Shabbat; working on this day would be like working directly in front of a king.

3 We say סַבְרִי מָרָנָן before making the blessing so that everyone present will pay attention and be prepared to answer Amen. Even when saying Kiddush alone, we say סַבְרִי מָרָנָן, because a person making Kiddush is accompanied by angels that guard over him, and they too should be called to attention for the blessing.

4 There are two opinions as to how the challot should be held—side by side or with the right challah slightly higher than the left. The Chabad custom is to do both: on Friday night we hold the challot evenly side by side, and on Shabbat day we hold the right challah a little higher than the left.
