Remember what Amalek did to you when you were traveling on the way, when you came out of Egypt;1 how he met you on the way, and cut down all the weak people who trailed behind you, while you were tired from thirst and exhausted from travel. He did not fear God. Therefore, it will be that when the Lord, your God, will let you rest from all of your enemies around you—when you finish conquering the Land of Israel, the land that the Lord, your God, gives you as an inheritance to pass on to your children—at that time you should wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget what Amalek did to you!

Kiddush for Shabbat Day

When a festival occurs on a weekday, the festival Kiddush is said, page 602.

When a festival or Chol Hamoed occurs on Shabbat, the following sections (until וְשָׁמְרוּ on the next page), are said quietly.

The following song was composed by King David: The Lord is my shepherd Who takes care of me. I am sure that I will not lack anything. He makes me lie down in comfortable green grass, as a shepherd does with his sheep, and He leads me peacefully, as if I am walking along calm waters. He always refreshes my soul. He directs me along the path of righteousness in order to bring honor to His name. Even when I walk in a dangerous place, like the valley of the shadow of death, I will not be afraid that bad things will happen, because You are with me. Your help and kindness are like a supporting walking stick and staff that protect and comfort me. Prepare the meal of perfect faith, which brings happiness to God, the holy King. Prepare the meal of the King. This is the meal of God’s Divine Presence, which is called Atika Kadisha. Two other levels of the Divine Presence—Chakal Tapuchin Kadishin and Z’eir Anpin—come to join Atika Kadisha at the meal.

The commandment to keep Shabbat

The Children of Israel should keep the Shabbat to establish the Shabbat4 for all of their generations as an everlasting covenant. It is an everlasting sign between Me and the Children of Israel that the Lord made the heaven and the earth in six days, and on the seventh day He stopped working and rested.

God will reward those who honor Shabbat

It is written in Isaiah: If you hold back your feet from walking beyond the permissible travel limit because of the laws of Shabbat, if you stop yourself from doing your work on My holy day, if you call Shabbat “a pleasure,”5 if you call the day that was made holy by the Lord “honored,” and if you honor it by not doing things in your regular, weekday manner, by not carrying out your weekday needs and by not speaking of weekday matters,6 then you will enjoy pleasure from the Lord,7 and I, God, will cause you to ride above and rule over the earth’s high places. I will provide you with the Land of Israel, the inheritance of your father Jacob. These things will happen because the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Commentary

1 The word קָרְךָ can also be translated as “cooled you down.” Not only did Amalek attack the Jewish Nation physically, but they also attacked them spiritually by “cooling them down” and discouraging them from getting excited about the Torah and its commandments.

2 Throughout the days of the week we must “remember” the holiness that we experienced on “the day of Shabbat.”

3 Although God is the one who makes Shabbat holy, we have the ability to add to its holiness by keeping it properly.

4 The holiness of Shabbat needs to be both “guarded” and “made.” We must guard the holiness that God has given to the day, but at the same time we must “make Shabbat” by creating additional holiness through proper observance.

וְשָׁמְרוּ can be translated as, “And they should eagerly await.” In order to keep Shabbat properly, we must eagerly await its coming by preparing for it during the week.

God judges the actions of the righteous more strictly than others. Since all Jews are elevated to a higher level of holiness on Shabbat, the entire nation must make sure to “guard” its actions and serve God with extra care on this day.

5 שָׁבַת can be translated as “rest” or “destruction” (הַשְׁבָּתָה). The rest and pleasure of Shabbat brings additional holiness to the world, thus destroying the forces of evil.

6 Just as you would be very careful about what to say in front of an important guest, so should you be careful when speaking on Shabbat, at which time your soul is filled with a special “guest”—an additional level of holiness.

God created the world through speech. Since He rested from this speech on Shabbat, we too are commanded to “rest” from speaking about mundane, worldly matters.

7 Literally, “pleasure above the Lord.” On Shabbat, we experience a revelation of holiness that is higher than God’s name. This revelation gives us great spiritual pleasure.
