Sephardi

Shevitin u-shevikin, mesa’avin de-rachikin,

English

The impure spirits, which are distant from holiness, take a break and rest on Shabbat. The angels of destruction, who cause trouble, and all those who are trapped in Gehinom, also rest on Shabbat.

לְמִבְצַע עַל רִפְתָּא, כְּזֵיתָא וּכְבֵיעְתָא,
תְּרֵין יוּדִין נָקְטָא, סְתִימִין וּפְרִישִׁין:

Sephardi

Le-mivtza al rifta, ke-zeita u-khvei’ata,
trein yudin nakta, setimin u-ferishin:

English

We slice the challah and eat at least the minimum amount, which is the size of either an olive or an egg, depending on how two yuds in a verse regarding eating are interpreted: according to the simple meaning, the size of an olive must be eaten, and according to the deeper meaning, the size of an egg must be eaten.

מְשַׁח זֵיתָא דַכְיָא, דְּטַחֲנִין רֵיחַיָּא,
וְנָגְדִין נַחֲלַיָּא, בְּגַוָּהּ בִּלְחִישִׁין:

Sephardi

Meshach zeita dakhya, de-tachanin reichaya,
ve-nagdin nachalaya, be-gavah bilchishin:

English

Olives have pure oil inside them. When the olives are crushed in a millstone, the oil flows like a stream. So too, the challah has holy secrets inside it.

דְּלֵיתְהוֹן מִתְחַזִּין, טְמִירִין וּכְבִישִׁין:

Hala neima razin, u-millin di-genizin,

Let us discuss the secrets and profound wisdom concealed deep in the words of the Torah; secrets that are otherwise unseen—they are hidden and covered.

הַאי הִלּוּלָא, דְּעִירִין קַדִּישִׁין:

May the bride—the day of Shabbat—be crowned with God’s secrets at this joyous banquet of holy angels.

May it be the will of God, Who is called the holiest Ancient One, the most hidden of all hidden ones and the most secret of all, that a heavenly, spiritual dew should be drawn down from Him and fill the head of Z’eir Anpin, a level of God’s Divine Presence, and then be given to another level of the Divine Presence, called the Holy Chakal Tapuchin, with a happy face, good will, and great joy.

Give praise to the Lord; call out His name.1 Make His great deeds known among the nations of the world. Sing to Him, play music to Him, and speak about all His great wonders. Take pride in His holy name; be proud that you have such a God. May the hearts of those who seek to be close to the Lord be happy. Search for ways to be close to the Lord, and for Him to show you His strength. Always look for His presence. Remember all the wonders that He did for us. Remember His miracles and the punishment He brought on our enemies through the command of His mouth. Who should remember all this? The descendants of Israel, God’s faithful servant; the sons of Jacob, who were chosen from all the nations. He is the Lord, our God, and we praise Him because His laws rule the whole world.

Always remember His Covenant that He made with our fathers. He commanded that the words of the Covenant should last for one thousand generations. It is the Covenant He made with Abraham and His oath to Isaac. He established His word as a law for Jacob; as an everlasting Covenant to the Children of Israel, which would never be broken. This is what God said to them: To you and your children, the Jewish Nation, I will give the land of Canaan, the Land of Israel. This land will be the portion that your children will inherit. I promised this to you when you were still very few in number, a small nation living as strangers in the Land
