Before eating bread, wash your hands: Once you have confirmed that your hands are wholly clean, take a filled cup of water in the right hand and transfer it to the left. Pour three times over the right hand, then three times over the left, wetting each entire hand up to the wrist every time.
Once washing is done, rub both hands together and say the blessing of עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם on page 165; afterward dry your hands and remain silent until you have said הַמּוֹצִיא and eaten the bread.
Before reciting the blessing over the two loaves of bread, lightly score (but do not cut) one of them with your knife. Grasp both loaves in your hands, recite the blessing, then slice a piece and eat it.
Should others be present at the meal who are not reciting a blessing over their own two loaves of bread, let them hear your blessing and take a piece from your bread. Custom has them recite the bread blessing upon their own piece prior to eating it.
Set salt upon the table, and dip the bread morsel into the salt before eating it. The Torah teaches that salt must accompany every sacrifice, and we commemorate this law by keeping salt upon the table, which is likened to an altar. According to kabbalah, you should dip the bread morsel into the salt three times.
