The following song was composed by King David: The Lord is my shepherd Who takes care of me. I am sure that I will not lack anything. He makes me lie down in comfortable green grass, as a shepherd does with his sheep, and He leads me peacefully, as if I am walking along calm waters. He always refreshes my soul. He directs me along the path of righteousness in order to bring honor to His name. Even when I walk in a dangerous place, like the valley of the shadow of death, I will not be afraid that bad things will happen, because You are with me. Your help and kindness are like a supporting walking stick and staff that protect and comfort me. You will set up a table for me in front of my enemies, filled with all the best things, and they will see that I have become successful. You have anointed me with oil to make me king, and my cup is full with everything I need. From now on, may only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life, so I will not suffer anymore. May I sit in the House of the Lord and serve Him peacefully for many long years.

Prepare the meal of perfect faith, which brings happiness to God, the holy King. Prepare the meal of the King. This is the meal of God’s Divine Presence, which is called Chakal Tapuchin Kadishin. Two other levels of the Divine Presence—Z’eir Anpin and Atika Kadisha—come to join the Chakal Tapuchin at the meal.
When a festival occurs on Shabbat, the festival Kiddush (page 556) is said.
Stand and hold the cup in the right hand<sup>1</sup> while reciting the Kiddush, and glance at the Shabbat candles as you begin. See illustration, page 956. Those listening to the Kiddush should respond אָמֵן as shown.

It is written in the Torah: It was the sixth day of the creation of the universe. The heaven and the earth and all of the creations within them, were completed.<sup>2</sup> By the seventh day, God finished His work of creating the universe, which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day He rested from all His work—the universe that God created to continuously function.

Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the universe, Who made us holy with His commandments and wanted us as His nation. He lovingly and willingly gave us His holy Shabbat as an inheritance; as a reminder of His work, the creation of the universe. Shabbat is the first of the holy days of celebration that are mentioned in the Torah, which are a reminder of the Exodus from Egypt.<sup>3</sup> God, You gave us Shabbat because You chose us as Your nation at Mount Sinai, and You made us holy from among all the nations; You lovingly and willingly gave us Your holy Shabbat as an inheritance. Blessed are You, Lord, Who makes the day of Shabbat holy. (Amen)
