English

But because of our sins we were exiled from our land and driven far from our country. We cannot go up to appear and bow before You, and to perform our duties in Your chosen House, the great and holy Temple that was called by Your name, because of the hand that was stretched out against Your Sanctuary. May it be Your will, LORD our God and God of our ancestors, merciful King, that You in Your abounding compassion may once more have mercy on us and on Your Sanctuary, rebuilding it swiftly and adding to its glory. Our Father, our King, reveal the glory of Your kingdom to us swiftly. Appear and be exalted over us in the sight of all that lives. Bring back our scattered ones from among the nations, and gather our dispersed people from the ends of the earth.

Commentary

… times in which we feel, most acutely, the absence of the Temple. Secondly, the festivals testify to the presence of God in history. Exile is the opposite. Not only is exile physical and geographical dispersion, it is also metaphysical: the “hiding of the face” of God (Deut. 31:18). The prayers for forgiveness, return to the land, the rebuilding of the Temple, and the reappearance of God in history, are thus intimately connected, and are most intensely felt on these days when we recall God’s deliverances and saving acts in Israel’s past.

… on other days of the year: the middle blessing is specific to the “holiness of the day.” On festivals, special emphasis is placed on rejoicing, mentioned in the Torah (Deut. 16:11–15) in connection with festivals.
