קריאת שמע וברכותיה
THE SHEMA’S BLESSINGS
The blessing and response that follow are recited only in the presence of a minyan. They constitute a formal summons calling the congregation to an act of collective prayer. Bowing at this point rests upon I Chronicles 29:20, "David told the entire assembly, 'Now bless the LORD your God.' The whole assembly blessed the LORD God of their fathers, bowing their heads low to the LORD and the King." The Leader recites what follows, bowing at "Bless," standing upright at "the LORD." The congregation, then the Leader, responds, bowing at "Bless," standing upright at "the LORD."

From this point until the Amida, custom is to sit, since love, rather than awe, is the predominant emotion of this section of the prayers. Until after the Amida, conversation is forbidden. Consult the table on pages 1384–1386
