and bring a fire-offering to the LORD. You may not perform any work on this day, for it is a Day of Atonements, to atone for you before the LORD your God. For any soul that is not afflicted on this very day will be cut off from its people. And any soul that performs any work on this very day - I shall cause that soul to be lost from among its people. You shall perform no work - this is an eternal ordinance for all your generations in all of your dwellings. It is a Sabbath of Sabbaths for you; you shall afflict your souls from the ninth of the month in the evening; you shall rest on your Sabbath until the following evening.

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month, there shall be a Festival of Booths for the LORD, for seven days. On the first day there shall be a sacred assembly; you shall do no laborious work. For seven days, you shall bring fire-offerings to the LORD; on the eighth day there will be a sacred assembly, and you shall bring another fire-offering to the LORD - it is a day of gathering; you shall do no laborious work. These are the appointed times of the LORD which you shall proclaim to be days of sacred assembly, bringing fire-offerings to the LORD: burnt-offerings, meal-offerings, peace-offerings and wine-libations, as ordained for each day, in addition to the LORD's Sabbath offerings, and your donated offerings, and all the vows and voluntary offerings which you may offer to the LORD. But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather the harvest of the land, you shall celebrate the LORD's holiday for seven days; the first day shall be a day of rest, and the eighth day shall be a day of rest. And on the first day, you shall take for yourselves a fruit of the citron tree, palm fronds, myrtle branches and willows of the brook, and be joyous in the presence of the LORD your God for seven days. You shall celebrate it, a holiday for the LORD, seven days a year - this is an eternal ordinance for all your generations - you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. You shall dwell in booths for seven days; all those born among Israel shall dwell in booths, so that your descendants will know that I settled the children of Israel in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. And Moses related all of the LORD's festivals to the children of Israel.
Half Kaddish (page 576) is said. The Maftir is read from the second Torah scroll: for the second day of Pesah on page 1178 and for the first two days of Sukkot on page 1208.
