Moses called for all of the elders of Israel and told them, "Select and take lambs for yourselves, one for each family, and slaughter them as a Pesaḥ offering. Then take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is on the threshold and apply of that blood to the lintel and the two side-posts; no man may exit the door of his house until morning. And the LORD shall come to strike Egypt; when He sees the blood upon the lintel and the two side-posts, He will pass over the opening and will not allow the Destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. You must observe this as a statute for you and for your children forever. *And when you enter the land which the LORD shall give you as He promised, you shall observe this rite. And if your children should say to you: 'What is this service to you?' You shall say: 'It is a Pesaḥ offering for the LORD, for He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt while He struck the Egyptians, but saved those in our homes'" – and the people bowed and prostrated themselves. So the children of Israel went and did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron; so it was done. And when midnight came, the LORD slew every firstborn in the land of Egypt: from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the captive in prison, and the firstborns of all their livestock. And Pharaoh arose at night, he and all of his servants and all of Egypt; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for no house was without one dead. So he called for Moses and Aaron at night, and said: "Rise up, leave the midst of my people, you and the children of Israel, and go worship the LORD as you said! Take both your sheep and your cattle, as you requested, and go – and you shall also bless me." *All of Egypt urged the people, making haste to expel them from their land – for they said, "We are all dying!" So the people carried their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs
