that He may establish you today as His people, and that He may be your God, as He spoke to you, and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Not with you alone do I make this covenant and this oath, but with him who stands here with us this day before the Lord our God, and also with him who is not here with us this day.

For you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; and you have seen their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them—lest there should be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from the Lord our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that bears gall and wormwood; and it come to pass, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying: "I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart"—that the watered be swept away with the dry. The Lord will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven. And the Lord shall single him out unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which the Lord has made it sick; and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath; even all the nations shall say: "Wherefore has the Lord done thus to this land? what means the heat of this great anger?" Then men shall say: "Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted to them; therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book; and the Lord rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day." The secret things belong to the Lord our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. And he said to them: "I am a hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in; and the Lord has said to me: You shall not go over this Jordan. The Lord your God, He will go over before you; He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them; Joshua, he shall go over before you, as the Lord has spoken."

And Moses called Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel: "Be strong and of good courage; for you shall go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. And the Lord, He it is that goes before you; He will be with you, He will not fail you, neither forsake you; fear not, neither be dismayed." And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it to the priests the sons of Levi, that bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. And Moses commanded them, saying: "At the end of every seven years, in the set time of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles, when all Israel is come to appear before the Lord your God in the place which He shall choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and your stranger that is within your gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law; and that their children, who have not known, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land whither you go over the Jordan to possess it."

Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will declare to you, your elders, and they will tell you. When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the children of men, He set the borders of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel. For the portion of the Lord is His people, Jacob the lot of His inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste, a howling wilderness; He compassed him about, He cared for him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. As an eagle that stirs up her nest, hovers over her young, spreads abroad her wings, takes them, bears them on her pinions—the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with Him.

And this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. And he said: The Lord came from Sinai, and rose from Seir to them; He shined forth from mount Paran, and He came from the myriads holy, at His right hand was a fiery law to them. Yea, He loves the peoples, all His holy ones—they are in Your hand; and they sit down at Your feet, receiving of Your words. Moses commanded us a law, an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. And there was a king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together. Let Reuben live, and not die in that his men become few. And this for Judah, and he said: Hear, Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him in to his people; his hands shall contend for him, and You shall be a help against his adversaries.

And of Levi he said: Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your holy one, whom You did prove at Massah, with whom You did strive at the waters of Meribah; who said of his father, and of his mother: 'I have not seen him'; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew he his own children; for they have observed Your word, and keep Your covenant. They shall teach Jacob Your ordinances, and Israel Your law; they shall put incense before You, and whole burnt-offering upon Your altar. Bless, Lord, his substance, and accept the work of his hands; smite through the loins of them that rise up against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again. Of Benjamin he said: The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him; He covers him all the day, and He dwells between his shoulders.

And of Joseph he said: Blessed of the Lord be his land; for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that couches beneath, and for the precious things of the fruits of the sun, and for the precious things of the yield of the moons, and for the tops of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the everlasting hills, and for the precious things of the earth and the fullness thereof, and the good will of Him that dwelt in the bush; let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the crown of the head of him that is prince among his brethren. His firstling bullock, majesty is his; and his horns are the horns of the wild-ox; with them he shall gore the peoples all of them, even the ends of the earth; and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
