I besought the Lord at that time, saying: "O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do according to Your works and according to Your mighty acts? Let me go over, I pray You, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that goodly hill country, and Lebanon."

But the Lord was wrathful with me for your sakes, and would not hear me; and the Lord said to me: "Let it suffice you; speak no more to Me of this matter. Get you up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold with your eyes; for you shall not go over this Jordan. But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you shall see." So we abode in the valley over against Beth-peor. And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, gives you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. Your eyes have seen what the Lord did in Baal-peor; for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the Lord your God has destroyed them from the midst of you. But you that did cleave to the Lord your God are alive every one of you this day.

Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land whither you go in to possess it. Observe therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that, when they hear all these statutes, shall say: "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." For what great nation is there, that has God so nigh to them, as the Lord our God is whensoever we call upon Him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

And it shall come to pass, because you hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the Lord your God shall keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers, and He will love you, and bless you, and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your land, your corn and your wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your fathers to give you. You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall be no male or female barren among you, or among your cattle. And the Lord will take away from you all sickness; and He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, upon you, but will lay them upon all them that hate you. And you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God shall deliver to you; your eye shall not pity them; neither shall you serve their gods; for that will be a snare to you. If you shall say in your heart: "These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?" you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt: the great trials which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the Lord your God brought you out; so shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. Moreover the Lord your God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and they that hide themselves, perish from before you. You shall not be affrighted at them; for the Lord your God is in the midst of you, a God great and awful.

And the Lord your God will cast out those nations before you by little and little; you may not consume them quickly, lest the beasts of the field increase upon you. But the Lord your God will deliver them up before you, and will discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they be destroyed. And He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name to perish from under heaven; there shall no man be able to stand against you, until you have destroyed them. The graven images of their gods shall you burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it to you, lest you be snared therein; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. And you shall not bring an abomination into your house, and be accursed like it; you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing. All the commandment which I command you this day shall you observe to do, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers. And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments, or no. And He afflicted you, and suffered you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you knew not, neither did your fathers know; that He might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every thing that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord does man live.

For the Lord your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey; a land wherein you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass. Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you shall hearken to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day; and the curse, if you shall not hearken to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which you have not known. And it shall come to pass, when the Lord your God shall bring you into the land whither you go to possess it, that you shall set the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal. Are they not beyond the Jordan, behind the way of the going down of the sun, in the land of the Canaanites that dwell in the Arabah, over against Gilgal, beside the terebinths of Moreh? For you are to pass over the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you shall possess it, and dwell therein.

And you shall observe to do all the statutes and the ordinances which I set before you this day. These are the statutes and the ordinances, which you shall observe to do in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess it, all the days that you live upon the earth. You shall surely destroy all the places, wherein the nations that you are to dispossess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every leafy tree. And you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and burn their Asherim with fire; and you shall hew down the graven images of their gods; and you shall destroy their name out of that place. You shall not do so to the Lord your God. But to the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put His name there, even to His habitation shall you seek, and thither you shall come.
