Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one from each side, and so his hands were a constant reminder to the Jews to have faith and trust in God until the sun set. Joshua weakened Amalek and his people with the sword; however, by the command of God, he did not wipe them out completely.

The Lord said to Moses: Write in the book that Amalek was the first nation to attack the Jewish Nation, so that it can serve as a memorial, and relay it to the ears of Joshua, who will be the one to bring the Jewish Nation into the Land of Israel, and he will command them to pay back Amalek. For it is my will and desire to completely eradicate them, and I will surely wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Moses then built an altar, and he named it "The Lord is my miracle," for it served as a reminder to the Jews of the miracle that God had performed for them. And Moses said: This altar shall also be a reminder that His Hand is figuratively raised to swear by the throne of the Lord that He has declared a war for the Lord against Amalek from generation to generation until they will be completely eradicated.

FIRST DAY OF PESACH

The following speaks about God taking the Jews out of Egypt, and the Pesach-offering together with some of its laws.

Moses called to all of the Jewish elders to gather together, and then said to them: On the tenth of Nissan, draw forth and take an animal from your flock for yourselves—each for your families—and on the fourteenth of Nissan, slaughter this animal as the Pesach-offering. After you slaughter it, you shall take a bundle of three stalks of hyssop and dip it in the blood of the Pesach-offering that has already been placed in the designated basin, and then brush the lintel and the two doorposts of your house, dipping the bundle in the blood that is in the basin before each brushing. On that night you should not have any person leave from the entrance of his house until the following morning. On that night, the Lord will pass through the entire land to afflict Egypt with the death of all the firstborn Egyptians, and He will see the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts of your homes. The Lord will pass over the entrances of these houses, and He will not allow the destructive force to come into your houses to afflict you. You shall keep all the laws related to this matter—the Pesach-offering—as a statute for you and your children forever.

And it will be that when you come to the Land of Israel, which the Lord will give you, as He has spoken and promised your forefathers, you shall observe this service of the Pesach-offering every year. It will be that when your children will say to you and ask, "What is this service that you are performing?" You shall say, "It is the Pesach-offering that we are bringing to the Lord because, when our ancestors were in Egypt, He passed over the houses of the Children of Israel when He afflicted the firstborn Egyptians, and He saved our houses and firstborns." After hearing all of the above, the people bowed and prostrated themselves before God. The Children of Israel accepted upon themselves to go and do everything exactly as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron to relay to them, and on the fourteenth they did exactly as they were commanded.

And it was at exactly midnight, on the night preceding the fifteenth of Nissan, the Lord struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the captive who is in the dungeon, as well as every firstborn animal. Pharaoh arose that night; first he arose, and then all his servants and all other Egyptians arose, and there was a great outcry in all of Egypt, for there was no house where there was no dead firstborn. Pharaoh called to Moses and Aaron, although it was in middle of the night, and he said, "Arise and go out from among my people; all of you, the Children of Israel—including the adults as well as the children—and go worship the Lord just as you have spoken. Also take all of your flock and cattle just as you have spoken, and go and serve the Lord! And bless me that I should not die, for I am also a firstborn."

The Egyptians pressed the Jewish Nation to hurry so that they could send them out of the land, because they said to themselves: If the Jews stay here any longer we will all be dead. On the fifteenth of Nissan, because they were rushed to leave, the people carried the dough that had not yet risen, as well as their leftover Matzah and Marror from the previous night wrapped in their garments, on their shoulders. The Children of Israel did everything according to the word of Moses and they requested silver and gold vessels, as well as garments, from the Egyptians. The Lord caused the Jewish Nation to find favor in the eyes of the Egyptians,
