within the land. Therefore, I command you, saying, "You shall surely open your hand to your poor and destitute brother who lives in your land." If your fellow Jewish brother or sister is sold to you, he shall serve you for more than six years, and in the seventh year of his service, you shall send him away from you as a free person. When you send him away from you as a free person, you shall not send him empty-handed. You shall surely provide for him animals from your flock, grain from your threshing floor, and wine from your vat. From anything that the Lord, your God, has blessed you with, you shall give to him. You shall always remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt, and the Lord, your God, was kind to you and redeemed you. Therefore I command this to you today: be kind to others who are in a similar situation. If it will be that the servant will say to you, his master, "I do not wish to leave you," for he loves you and your household, because it is good for him to be with you, then you shall take a piercing tool and pierce his ear at the door. Afterward, he shall be your servant "forever"—until the jubilee year. Just as you send away your freed servant with presents, you shall also do the same for your maidservant. When you send your servant away as a free person, it should not be difficult in your eyes, for he has earned for you double the earnings of a hired worker—by serving you both day and night—throughout the six years that he worked for you, and when you send him away happily, the Lord, your God, will bless you in all that you do.

You shall consecrate to the Lord, your God, every male firstborn that is born in your cattle or flock by declaring it sacred as a firstborn. And from the time the animal is born until you give it to a Kohen, you shall not have any gain from the animal; for example, do not work with the firstborn of your ox nor shear the firstborn of your flock. To the Kohen who received the firstborn animal, God says: you shall eat it before the Lord, your God, within the year of its birth—while it is still less than a year old, in Jerusalem, the place that the Lord will choose. It is for you, the Kohen, and your household to eat. If there will be any blemish on the firstborn animal, whether it be lame, blind, or any other serious blemish that is visible on the outside and permanent, you shall not slaughter it in order to bring it as an offering to the Lord, your God. Rather, you may eat it within any of your cities—not only in Jerusalem. The pure person and the impure person may eat it together, just as you may eat the deer and the gazelle or any other animals that are kosher but not offered as a sacrifice. However, as with all animals whose meat you may eat, you may not eat its blood; you shall spill it on the ground like water.

When setting the Jewish calendar, you should add an extra month every few years to ensure that the month of Nissan always occurs during the spring. On the fourteenth of Nissan, you shall bring the Pesach-offering to the Lord, your God. For it was in this month, in the spring, that the Lord, your God, brought you out of Egypt; beginning on the night of the fifteenth, when Pharaoh gave the Jews permission to leave. You shall sacrifice the Pesach-offering to the Lord, your God, from your flock, and also the standard festival-offering from your cattle, in the Holy Temple—the place where the Lord will choose to rest His Name. You shall not eat bread or any other leavened foods with it nor have any in your possession. For seven days you shall eat matzot—the bread that reminds you of your affliction in the land of Egypt—for you went out of the land of Egypt in great haste and did not have time to allow your dough to rise. Eat the Pesach-offering and matzot every year so that you will remember the day you went out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.

And during the seven days of Pesach no leavened foods, belonging to you, shall be seen within all of your property, and there shall not remain overnight any of the meat of the sacrifices that you will sacrifice in the afternoon of the previous day, the fourteenth of Nissan, until the morning—you must eat it that night. You may not slaughter the Pesach offering and offer it on an altar in any of your cities that the Lord, your God, is giving you. Only, you must bring it to the Holy Temple—the place where the Lord, your God, will choose to rest His Name, and there, you shall slaughter the Pesach-offering in the afternoon of the fourteenth of Nissan, and you shall eat it when the sun sets, and all the meat shall be eaten by morning—the time that you went out of Egypt. You shall roast the Pesach-offering and eat it in Jerusalem—the place that the Lord, your God, will choose—on night of the fifteenth of Nissan.
