Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Your righteous servants, who have served You faithfully, to whom You swore by Your very Self, and You spoke to them, "I will increase your descendants to be as numerous as the stars of the heavens, and all this Land of Israel of which I spoke, I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit and inhabit it forever." If You annihilate them, how will this promise be fulfilled? The Lord relented on the bad plan that He said He would do to His people, the entire Jewish Nation, and decided to punish only those who had sinned.

Moses broke the first set of Tablets when he saw the Jewish Nation had served the Golden Calf. After the Lord forgave them, He said to Moses: Carve for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will inscribe upon the Tablets the words of the Ten Commandments that were on the first Tablets, which you broke. Be prepared for the great revelation you will experience in the morning, and in the morning you shall ascend Mount Sinai and stand before Me there at the top of the mountain. When you ascended the mountain to receive the first Tablets, others were allowed to ascend with you part of the way to increase the fanfare. This time, however, they will be given in private. No one, not even Aaron, your brother, shall ascend the mountain with you, nor shall anyone be seen anywhere on the mountain. The sheep and the cattle shall not even graze facing that mountain.

don't repent. He remembers the intentional sins of parents and, if they continue in their parents' ways, punishes their children and children's children to the third and fourth generations for their sins as well. As Moses saw the Divine Presence was about to leave, he hurried, bowed his head toward the ground, prostrated himself, and said: If I have now found favor in Your eyes, my Lord, then please may the Divine Presence of my Lord go in our midst as we journey, since You have forgiven us. HAFTARAH FOR MINCHAH OF PUBLIC FAST DAYS

For the blessings that are said before and after the Haftarah, see page 404-404.
In the following Haftarah, God encourages His people, even sinners, to return to Him and promises that He will mercifully forgive those who improve their ways. This is read on a fast day, a time when we should consider our actions and repent.

Seek the Lord and return to Him while He still allows Himself to be found and persuaded—before a decree is sealed—call to Him while He is near. Let the wicked abandon his evil ways, and let the unrighteous abandon his wrong thoughts; let him return to the Lord and He will have mercy upon him, and let him return to our God, for He will generously forgive him.
