הוֹדוּ Give praise1 to the Lord; call out His name. Make His great deeds known among the nations of the world. Sing to Him, play music to Him, and speak about all His great wonders. Take pride in His holy name; be proud that you have such a God. May the hearts of those who seek to be close to the Lord be happy.2 Search for ways to be close to the Lord and for Him to show you His strength. Always look for His presence. Remember all the wonders that He did for us. Remember His miracles and the punishment He brought on our enemies through the command of His mouth. Who should remember all this? The descendants of Israel, God's faithful servant; the sons of Jacob, who was chosen from all the nations. He is the Lord, our God, and we praise Him because His laws rule the whole world.

never be broken. This is what God said to them: To you and your children, the Jewish Nation, I will give the land of Canaan, the Land of Israel. This land will be the portion that your children will inherit. I promised this to you when you were still very few in number, a small nation living as strangers in the Land of Israel. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob wandered from one nation to another. Even within the land of Canaan itself, they went from one kingdom to another, but God didn't let anyone mistreat them. God rebuked kings, including Pharaoh and Abimelech, because these kings tried to hurt them. Everyone on earth, sing to the Lord. Speak every day about His salvation. Tell the nations of the world about His glory. Tell all the nations of the world about His wonders. There is honor and beauty in God's presence. There is strength and joy in the place where He is. Families—people—of the nations should give to the Lord; they should give honor and strength to the Lord. Give the Lord the honor that His name deserves. Bring an offering for God and come before Him to the Holy Temple. Bow down to the Lord in the Holy Temple, from where His beautiful holiness emanates. All the nations of the earth should tremble before God with fear. God made the world a secure place; it will never falter because He will always support it.3 When the Redemption arrives, the heavens will be happy, the earth will rejoice, and all the nations

Commentary

1 The Hebrew word for "praise" (הוֹדוּ) has two other meanings: "acknowledge" and "give thanks." By saying these words, we not only thank God and praise Him for everything He does for us, but we also acknowledge His greatness with awe and respect.

2 Usually we are disappointed when we search for something but are unable to find it. When we "seek God," however, we become "happy," even if our search does not yield the results we desire. The very act of searching for God makes people happy, because it brings them closer to Him.

3 If God would reveal His full glory to the world, it would immediately "falter" and be destroyed because it would not be able to absorb such great holiness. God therefore conceals His full glory, allowing only a little bit to shine through. This is how God makes the world a "secure place."
