The full form of Hallel is recited upon the first two nights and days of Pesach, Shavuot's two days, Sukkot's nine days (including Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah), and Chanukah's eight days. On Rosh Chodesh and Pesach's final six days, a shortened form of Hallel (known as "Half Hallel") is recited instead; passages left unsaid are marked further below.
During Sukkot, grasp the lulav with the right hand while reciting Hallel. At the several places marked below, shake the lulav and etrog together. See illustration, page 956. Upon Hoshana Rabbah, remove the two rings from the lulav's upper portion before reciting Hallel.
Hallel is to be recited standing, with no interruption.
When a minyan is present, the chazzan recites aloud the blessing that follows. Upon reciting the full form of Hallel, those assembled answer אָמֵן and repeat the blessing. Upon reciting Half Hallel, the chazzan bears in mind that he utters the blessing for the assembled, and those assembled answer אָמֵן, bearing in mind that the chazzan utters the blessing for them. If you recite Hallel, complete or half, absent a minyan, utter the blessing.
