The following was composed by King David: My troubles are like darkness, and the Lord is my light and my salvation. So of whom should I be afraid? The Lord is the strength of my life, so whom should I fear? When wicked people approached me to attack me, they wanted to eat my flesh, but God protected me from my oppressors and my enemies; they stumbled and fell. Even if an entire army would attack me, my heart would not be afraid of it. If a war would start against me, I would trust in this; I would trust in the fact that God is my light and my salvation. I have asked the Lord for only one thing, it is something that I seek: to be free from any worries so I can sit in the house of the Lord and serve Him all the days of my life; to see the pleasantness of the Lord and to learn Torah in His sanctuary. God will hide me in His shelter on a day of danger, when enemies want to attack me. He will hide me in the hidden places in His tent. He will lift me onto a rock so my enemies cannot reach me. And then my head will be proudly raised above my enemies around me, for I will have defeated them, and I will offer sacrifices in the Sanctuary, God's holy tent, with joyous song. I will sing and play music to the Lord for saving me. Lord, hear my voice when I call; be gracious to me and answer me. God, my heart speaks for You and says, "Seek My presence and look for Me." And yes, Lord, I do seek Your presence. Do not hide Your presence from me. Do not throw Your servant away in anger. You have been my rescuer from my enemies; now help my soul find You. God of my salvation, do not abandon me or forsake me. Although my father and mother have forsaken me when they sent me out on my own, the Lord will take me in and never abandon me. Lord, teach me Your way and lead me in the straight and righteous path of Torah, because my enemies who watch me will celebrate if I sin. God, do not give me over to my enemies; do not let me be controlled by the will of my oppressors, because false witnesses have come up to testify against me, and they speak evil. My enemies would have crushed me if I would not have believed that I would see the Lord's goodness in the World to Come, which is called "the land of life." Have hope in the Lord; be strong, let your heart be brave, and have hope in the Lord.

It is our duty to praise God, the Master of all things; to give greatness to the Creator of all existence. Praise Him because He has not made us like the other nations of the world. He has given each of us a soul that is part of Himself, and He has not put us to be like the other families of the earth, who do not have the Torah and its commandments. We should praise Him because He has not given us a portion like theirs; He has given us His Torah. He has not given us a share like all of their people; for they bow down to false gods—to emptiness and nothingness. But we bend our knees and bow down, and give praise to the supreme King of all kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, Who stretches out the heavens and establishes the earth. The seat of His glory is in heaven above and the home of His majesty is in heaven, in the greatest spiritual heights. He is our God; there is none other. Truly, He is our King; there is nothing besides Him, as it is written in His Torah: Know that the Lord is God; let it be as certain to you as if you saw today the revelation of God as it was at the Giving of the Torah. Take it to your heart. Really feel and believe what you know: that the Lord is the God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is nothing else.
