their God? Why doesn’t He help them?” May the retribution You take for the bloodshed of Your servants be known among the nations and occur before our eyes. And it also says in Psalms: God, Who avenges bloodshed, remembered the Jewish Nation; He has not forgotten the cry of humble people. It also says in Psalms: God will judge the nations, and they will be full of dead bodies as a result. He will crush their heads over a wide area. The Jewish Nation will fearlessly drink from their enemy’s stream on their way to battle. Therefore, the Jewish Nation will hold their heads high with pride.

Concentrate intently the meaning of the verse פּוֹתֵחַ אֶת יָדֶךָ in the following paragraph. If said without concentration repeat the verse with concentration. For transliteration, see page 942.

Fortunate are those who dwell in Your house; fortunate are those who visit the Holy Temple. They will praise You forever. Fortunate is the nation that such is their lot; fortunate is the nation whose God is the Lord. generation about the might of Your awesome acts, and I will speak about Your greatness. They will tell their children about the memories of Your great goodness to them, and they will sing to everyone about Your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and merciful, even to those who don’t deserve it. He is slow to get angry and punish those who don’t listen to Him;3 and He treats them with great kindness if they repent. The Lord is good to every living thing, and He has mercy on all His creations.4 Lord, all Your creations will give thanks to You, and Your devoted people will bless You. They will speak about the majesty of Your kingdom; they will speak about Your great strength. They will speak about these things to let people know about God’s mighty acts, and the honorable beauty of His kingdom. God, Your kingdom is a kingdom that includes all worlds, and Your rulership over the worlds will continue forever, throughout all future generations. The Lord supports all those who fall, and He straightens those who are bent. God, everyone’s eyes look hopefully to You for help, and You give them their food at the proper time.5 You open Your hand and provide enough food to satisfy the desires of every living being. The Lord is fair in all His ways, and He is kind in everything He does. The Lord is close to all those who call out to Him, and He answers all those who call out to Him truthfully and honestly. Commentary

1 The word וַאֲבָרְכָה can also be translated as “I will draw down,” and the word לְעוֹלָם can be translated as “to the world.” As humans we might not be able to praise God forever (in the literal sense), but we are able draw down God’s light into this world by “exalting Him.”

2 The word תְּהִלָּה is similar to the word בְּהִלּוֹ, which means “shine forth.” When we initially bless God, we cause His light to be drawn down into this world. When we then praise Him, we enable that light to shine forth.

3 These words literally mean “long face.” God’s “face” refers to His love, because love is always shown face to face. His love is “long;” it reaches even the lowest levels.

4 God’s mercy extends to every single one of His creations. Unlike humans, who only have mercy on those they can relate to, God has mercy even on those who sin and are completely removed from Him.

5 God provides food at a time that is proper for both the person and the food. He gives the food when the person is ready for it, and when the food is ready to be eaten.

6 Prayer is sometimes referred to as רָצוֹן. God answers the prayers of those who fear Him, and fulfills their requests.
