and his sons about the removal of the ashes from the altar each morning. Tell them: This is the law regarding the burnt-offering:1 The burnt-offering should remain on the firewood on the altar the entire night, until the morning, so that it should burn properly. The fire of the altar should be burning the entire time. The Kohen should put on his linen clothing and put linen pants on his body. Then, using a special shovel, he should remove some of the remaining ashes of the burnt-offering that was consumed by the fire on the altar, and he should put it next to the altar on the east side of the altar's ramp. There is another pile of ashes in the center of the altar. When this pile becomes too large, a Kohen should take off his special linen clothes, so they will not get dirty, and he should put on other clothes that are not as special as the linen clothes. He should then remove this larger pile of ashes from the middle of the altar and take it to a pure place, outside the three camps of the Jewish Nation. The fire on the altar must always be burning; it must not go out. The Kohen should burn wood on the fire every morning. On this firewood he should set up the burnt-offering, and he should also burn the fat of the peace-offering on it. The fire must always be burning on the altar;2 it must not go out.3

On days when Tachanun is not said (see page 108), the following paragraph is not said:

May it be Your will, Lord, our God and the God of our fathers, that You should have mercy on us and forgive us for all our unintentional sins, forgive all our intentional sins, and forgive and pardon us for all our rebellious sins. May the Holy Temple be rebuilt quickly in our days. Then we will be able to bring to You the daily burnt-offering, which will atone for our sins, as You wrote for us in Your Torah through Moses, Your servant, who heard the words from the mouth of Your glory, as it says:

The Lord spoke to Moses and gave him instructions to tell the Jewish Nation: Command the Children of Israel and say to them: For My offering—which is like My food for My fires on the altar, and whose smell is pleasing to Me when you offer it—you should appoint Kohanim and Levites to take care to offer it to Me at its proper time, every morning and afternoon. You should tell the court of law to instruct the Jewish Nation: This is the fire-burnt offering that you should offer to the Lord: Two lambs that are less than a year old and unblemished, offered each day as a daily burnt-offering, to be completely consumed by the fire on the altar. Prepare the first lamb to be offered in the morning and the second lamb to be offered in the late afternoon. Along with this offering, you should offer a tenth of an ephah (about nine cups) of fine flour as a flour-offering, mixed with a quarter of a hin (about four cups) of oil from crushed olives. That is the daily burnt-offering, the way it was done when the Jewish Nation built the Sanctuary and were next to Mount Sinai.4 The daily burnt-offering is a fire-offering, offered to make a pleasing smell for the Lord. Commentary

1 An alternative, more literal translation: "This is the Torah of elevation." This verse hints at the fact that Torah study elevates and improves our spiritual condition to the point where we can overcome our darkest forces, including our entire evil inclination—in the words of this verse: "the entire night."

2 The Temple altar symbolizes a person's heart, the "seat" of one's love for God. Just as the fire on the altar had to burn constantly, our hearts must also be burning constantly with love for God.

3 The phrase "it must not go out" can be interpreted as follows: Everything that is "not"—everything that is negative and evil in the world—must "go out" and be destroyed. We can achieve this by serving God with fiery passion and excitement.

4 The very first daily burnt-offering was sacrificed on Mount Sinai, on the day before the giving of the Torah. The purpose of the giving of the Torah was to make the physical world holy. In preparation for this, a physical animal was transformed into a holy sacrifice.
