וַיְהִי אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה,
וְהָאֱלֹהִים נִסָּה אֶת
אַבְרָהָם, וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו, אַבְרָהָם,
וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּנִי: וַיֹּאמֶר, קַח נָא
אֶת בִּנְךָ אֶת יְחִידְךָ אֲשֶׁר
אָהַבְתָּ אֶת יִצְחָק, וְלֶךְ לְךָ אֶל
אֶרֶץ הַמּוֹרִיָּה, וְהַעֲלֵהוּ שָׁם
לְעֹלָה עַל אַחַד הֶהָרִים, אֲשֶׁר
אֹמַר אֵלֶיךָ:
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר,
וַיַּחֲבֹשׁ אֶת חֲמֹרוֹ<sup>1</sup> וַיִּקַּח אֶת
שְׁנֵי נְעָרָיו אִתּוֹ וְאֵת יִצְחָק
בְּנוֹ, וַיְבַקַּע עֲצֵי עֹלָה וַיָּקָם
וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר
לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים: בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי
וַיִּשָּׂא אַבְרָהָם אֶת עֵינָיו, וַיַּרְא
אֶת הַמָּקוֹם מֵרָחֹק: וַיֹּאמֶר
אַבְרָהָם אֶל נְעָרָיו שְׁבוּ לָכֶם
פֹּה עִם הַחֲמוֹר, וַאֲנִי וְהַנַּעַר
נֵלְכָה עַד כֹּה, וְנִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה
וְנָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם: וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָהָם
אֶת עֲצֵי הָעֹלָה וַיָּשֶׂם עַל יִצְחָק
בְּנוֹ וַיִּקַּח בְּיָדוֹ אֶת הָאֵשׁ וְאֶת
הַמַּאֲכֶלֶת, וַיֵּלְכוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם יַחְדָּו:
וַיֹּאמֶר יִצְחָק אֶל אַבְרָהָם אָבִיו
וַיֹּאמֶר אָבִי, וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֶּנִּי בְנִי,
וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה הָאֵשׁ וְהָעֵצִים וְאַיֵּה

<b>It happened after these things</b>—after the Satan accused Abraham of not being loyal to God—<b>that God tested Abraham</b> with a difficult test, to see if he was loyal to Him. <b>God said to him, "Abraham,"</b> and Abraham answered, <b>"Here I am,</b> ready to do as You say." <b>God said, "Please take your son,"</b> to which Abraham replied, "I have two sons, Isaac and Ishmael." God explained <b>"Take your only son."</b> Abraham replied, "But each of them is an only son to his mother." God explained, <b>"Take the one you love."</b> Abraham replied, "But I love them both." So God made it clear, <b>"Take Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah</b> (Jerusalem), <b>and bring him up there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains.</b> When you get closer, <b>I will tell you which one."</b> <b>Abraham</b> wanted to follow God's instructions as soon as possible, so he <b>rose early in the morning and he saddled his donkey</b><sup>1</sup> himself. He <b>took his two helpers,</b> Eliezer and Ishmael, <b>with him, as well as his son, Isaac. He chopped wood for the fire of the burnt-offering and got up and went to</b> Jerusalem, <b>the place to which God had told him to go. On the third day</b> of his journey, <b>Abraham looked up and saw</b> a cloud resting on a mountain <b>far away,</b> and he realized that it was the <b>place</b> to which God had told him to go. <b>Abraham said to his helpers,</b> Eliezer and Ishmael, <b>"You stay here with the donkey, and I will go with the young man,</b> Isaac, <b>to the place over there. We will bow</b> to God, <b>and then we will return to you." Abraham took the wood</b> that he had prepared for the fire of the <b>burnt-offering and placed it on Isaac, his son,</b> so he could carry it up the mountain. <b>He took the fire</b> to light the wood <b>and the knife</b> to sacrifice the offering <b>in his hand, and the two of them went together.</b> <b>Isaac spoke to Abraham, his father, and said, "Father." Abraham answered, "Here I am, my son."</b> Isaac said, <b>"We have here the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the burnt-offering?" Abraham answered, "God will provide a sheep as a burnt-offering for Himself, my son." The two of them went together.</b> <b>They reached the place</b> to which God had told Abraham to go. <b>Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood</b> for the fire, <b>tied</b> the hands and feet of <b>his son,</b> Isaac, so he shouldn't be able to move. Abraham <b>put him on the altar, on top of the wood</b><sup>2</sup> that he had prepared. Then <b>Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife</b> to sacrifice his son. But before Abraham had a chance to continue, an angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven and said, <b>"Abraham! Abraham!"</b> Abraham answered, <b>"Here I am,</b> ready to do as You say." The angel <b>said</b> in the name of God, <b>"Do not stretch out your hand</b> to sacrifice <b>the young man. Do not do anything</b> to him, <b>because now I</b> and the entire world <b>know that you</b> would do anything for Me and that you are a God-fearing man, because <b>you have not kept your only son,</b> Isaac, <b>from Me."</b>
