nor of a plague that goes around in the afternoon. Even if plagues cause a thousand people on your left side and ten thousand on your right side to fall down and die, it will not reach you. Just look with your eyes, and you will see that the wicked people are being punished. This will happen because you said, “You, Lord, are my shelter,” and you made God, the Most High, as your shelter
On days when Tachanun is not said (see page 108), continue with אָנָּא בְּכֹחַ, page 255.

VIDUY AND TACHANUN

May God accept our prayers even though we have sinned

Our God and the God of our fathers, may our prayers reach You; may they come to You. Do not turn away our requests; do not ignore our prayers, because we are not so shameless and stubborn to say to You, Lord, our God and the God of our fathers, that we are righteous people and have not sinned. Rather, we admit that we and our ancestors have sinned.
While mentioning each sin in the following paragraph, tap the left side of your chest with your right fist. This shows regret for having followed any desires of the heart that may have led to sin.

We have transgressed, we have betrayed You, we have robbed, and we have spoken badly about others. We have acted crookedly and wickedly, we have sinned intentionally, we have been violent, and we have joined in false accusations against others. We have given bad advice, we have lied, we have mocked good people, we have rebelled against You, we have made You angry, we have turned away from You. We have sinned, we have rebelled against You, we have made things difficult for others, and we have been too stubborn. We have done wicked things, we have acted destructively, we have acted disgustingly, we have gone off the right path, and we have led others off the right path.1
Tap the chest (as above) while saying the words סַרְנוּ and הִרְשָׁעְנוּ.

We have turned away from Your commandments and Your good laws, and it was not worth it for us. You are fair and righteous for bringing all the punishments that come upon us, because You have acted truthfully toward us, treating us as we deserve; but we, on the other hand, have acted wickedly toward You.

What excuse can we say to You, God, Who lives in the high spiritual levels? What justification can we tell You, God, Who dwells in the heavens? For surely, You see and know everything we do, whether they are hidden or revealed to others!

God, You know the mysteries of the universe and the hidden secrets of every living being. You search and see all our innermost thoughts, and You examine our minds and hearts; nothing is hidden from You, and nothing is concealed from Your sight. Therefore, may it be Your will, Lord, our God and the God of our fathers, that You should have mercy on us and forgive us for all our unintentional sins, and atone for us for all our intentional sins, and forgive and pardon us for all our rebellious sins.
