וּלְךָ עָשִׂיתָ שֵׁם גָּדוֹל וְקָדוֹשׁ בְּעוֹלָמֶךָ,
וּלְעַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל עָשִׂיתָ תְּשׁוּעָה גְּדוֹלָה
וּפֻרְקָן כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. וְאַחַר כָּךְ בָּאוּ בָנֶיךָ
לִדְבִיר בֵּיתֶךָ, וּפִנּוּ אֶת הֵיכָלֶךָ, וְטִהֲרוּ אֶת
מִקְדָּשֶׁךָ, וְהִדְלִיקוּ נֵרוֹת בְּחַצְרוֹת1 קָדְשֶׁךָ.
וְקָבְעוּ שְׁמוֹנַת יְמֵי חֲנֻכָּה אֵלּוּ, לְהוֹדוֹת
וּלְהַלֵּל לְשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל:

Ulecha asita shem gadol vekadosh be'olamecha,
ule'amcha Yisrael asita teshu'ah gedolah
ufurkan kehayom hazeh. Ve'achar kach ba'u vanecha
lidvir beitecha, ufinu et heichalecha, vetiharu et
mikdashecha, vehidliku nerot bechatzrot1 kodshecha.
Vekav'u shemonat yemei Chanukah elu, lehodot
ulehallel leshimcha hagadol:

English

Through these great acts, You made a great and holy name for Yourself in Your world. And for Your nation, the Children of Israel, You brought about a great salvation and redemption; it is spoken about and praised to this very day. After they won the war, Your children, the Jewish Nation, entered the Holy Temple, cleaned out the idols that the Syrian-Greeks had put in Your Sanctuary, and purified Your Holy Temple. They lit candles of celebration in and around the courtyards1 of Your Holy Temple, and they instituted these eight days of Chanukah to give thanks and praise to Your great name.

In the days of Mordechai and Esther, in Shushan, the capital of Persia—when the wicked Haman rose up against them, and wanted to destroy, kill, and wipe out all the Jews—young and old, children and women—in one day, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to take their money and possessions—You, God, in Your great mercy, canceled Haman's ideas and wrecked his plans. You caused his evil plans to return on his own head—they hanged Haman and his sons on the gallows.

English

And because of all these things You do for us, God, our King, may Your name always be blessed, exalted, and raised forever and ever.

Decree a good year for us

וּכְתֹב לְחַיִּים טוֹבִים כָּל בְּנֵי בְרִיתֶךָ:

Uchtov lechayim tovim kol b'nei veritecha:

English

Write down for a good life all of the Children of Israel, the nation that accepted Your Covenant—the Torah and its commandments.

Bend knees at בָּרוּךְ; bow at אַתָּה; straighten up at יְיָ.

וְכֹל הַחַיִּים יוֹדוּךָ סֶּלָה, וִיהַלְלוּ
שִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל לְעוֹלָם כִּי

And all living things will thank You forever, and they will praise Your great name forever, because You are good. You are the God Who is our everlasting salvation and help; You are the good God. Blessed are You, Lord—You have a good name and reputation, and it is appropriate to give You thanks.

English

God, place peace, goodness, blessing, life, graciousness, kindness, and mercy on us and on all of the Children of Israel, Your nation. God, our Father, bless all of us together as one with the light of Your shining face. For with the light of Your shining face, Lord, our God, You gave us the Torah of life, loving-kindness, righteousness, blessing, mercy, life, and peace. May it be a good thing in Your eyes to bless Your nation, the Children of Israel, with Your peace at all times and at every moment.

God, remember us and Your entire nation, the House of Israel, and inscribe us in the book of life, blessing, peace, good livelihood, salvation, comfort, and good decrees, for a good life and for peace.
