Shacharit for Weekdays
Say the following immediately upon waking up in the morning:
We thank God for returning our soul

מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם,
שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי
בְּחֶמְלָה. רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ:<sup>1</sup>

Modeh ani lefanecha melech chai vekayam,
shehechezarta bi nishmati
b'chemlah. Rabbah emunatecha:

<b>I give thanks before You,</b> God, the <b>King Who lives</b> and <b>exists forever,</b> for <b>You returned my soul to me with mercy. Your trustworthiness is great,</b> because You return my soul each morning.<sup>1</sup>
Wash your hands in the following manner: Lift a cup of water in your right hand, pass it to your left hand, pour it over your right hand, then pour it over your left hand; repeat until each hand has been washed three times. Then dry your hands. We wash our hands in this manner to remove the impure spirits that have attached themselves to us during our sleep.
On Tishah B'Av and Yom Kippur wash your hands only until the knuckles.
It is customary to perform this washing twice: once before getting out of bed, and then again after dressing and attending to bodily needs. After the second washing, recite the following blessings while standing.
