Shacharit on Weekdays
Upon arising in the morning, recite the following at once:
We thank God for our soul's restoration

מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶיךָ מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם,
שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי
בְּחֶמְלָה. רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ:1

shehechezarto bi nishmosi
b'chemloh. raboh emunosecho:
Cleanse your hands as follows: Raise a cup of water with your right hand, transfer it to your left hand, pour it upon your right hand, then pour it upon your left hand; keep on until each hand has been washed three times. Next, dry your hands. We cleanse our hands thus in order to drive off the impure spirits that fastened themselves to us in our sleep.
Wash the hands only as far as the knuckles on Tishah B'Av and Yom Kippur.
Custom calls for this washing to be done twice: first before leaving the bed, and once more after dressing and seeing to bodily needs. Following the second washing, say the blessings below while standing.
