perspective from Your Torah. His suffering in this world saves him and gives him rest from worse suffering in evil days—Gehinom—after he passes away. The righteous will be punished in this world until a grave is dug for the wicked—until all evil is gone from the world. The Lord will not abandon His people; He will not forsake His inheritance, the Jewish Nation. For His judgment and punishment lasts only until the person returns to righteousness, and afterward, all people will follow God with an upright heart.

Each one of us should ask God: Who will rise up for me against wicked people? Who will stand up for me against people who do evil things? Had the Lord not been a help to me, my soul would have soon settled in a silent grave. When I was in great danger, and I thought my foot was slipping, Your kindness, Lord, supported me and saved me. When I have many worried thoughts within me, Your words of comfort, which the prophets told us in Your name, make my soul happy. Can a person who sits on the seat of evil be close with You, God? Can a person who makes an unfair judgment and establishes it as a law be close with You? Wicked people may join together to plan against the life of the righteous person and make the innocent blood of the righteous person guilty by falsely telling a court that he deserves to die. But the Lord has saved me from evil plans; He has been my tower of strength. My God has been a strong rock, Who makes me safe. God will turn the violence of the wicked against them; He will destroy them with their own wickedness. The Lord, our God, will destroy them.

When the Redemption arrives, the Jewish Nation will say to each other, Come, let us sing to the Lord;1 let us raise our voices in joy to God, the strong Rock, Who is our salvation. Let us approach Him with thanks. Let us raise our voices to Him in song, because the Lord is a great God and a great King over all heavenly beings.

The following is a song that was composed by Asaf for the choirmaster of the Levites, to be performed in the Holy Temple and played on an instrument called the gittit: Sing joyfully to God, our strength; blow the shofar for the God of Jacob. Raise your voice in song. Play musical instruments for God; play the drum, the pleasant harp, and the lyre. Blow the shofar at the beginning of the month, when the new moon is born, on the day set aside as our Festival—Rosh Hashanah. For blowing the shofar is a commandment for the Children of Israel on Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgment by the God of Jacob.

God will take us out of exile if we listen to Him

God set the blowing of the shofar as a reminder that Joseph was freed from prison on Rosh Hashanah and went out to rule over the land of Egypt. God sent an angel to teach Joseph the seventy languages that he had to know in order to be an Egyptian ruler. Joseph said, “I heard and understood a language that I did not know before.” God said, I removed from Joseph’s shoulder the weights that he had to carry in prison; his hands passed from the kettle and he no longer had to boil water for his master. Children of Israel, you called out to Me in times of trouble, and I saved you. You called out secretly, and I answered you with thunderous miracles. I tested you at the waters of Meribah, where, instead of having faith in Me, you complained that you had no water. Just as I took care of you then, I will continue to take care of you forever.
