May You, God, Who is appeased with our requests for mercy and is calmed by our prayers, be appeased and calmed when dealing with this afflicted generation, because there is no one who can help us from our suffering besides You, God.

On public fast days, Selichot are said at this point.

Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and on public fast days, say the long version of אֲבִינוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ, page 693, instead of the following paragraph.

Our Father, our King, You are our Father. Our Father, our King, we have no King except for You. Our Father, our King, have mercy on us. Our Father, our King, be gracious to us and answer us, because we have no good deeds, and we do not deserve Your kindness. God, act righteously and kindly with us for the sake of Your great name, and save us from all our troubles.

On days when the Torah is not read, rise when you reach the words “מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה” below.

We do not know what to do in order to be saved,1 but our eyes are on You, God, hoping that You will save us. Lord, remember Your acts of mercy and Your acts of kindness, because they have always been done—You’ve always acted with mercy and kindness. Lord, may Your kindness be upon us, as much as we have placed our hope in You. God, do not bring to mind our past sins. Let Your mercy come quickly toward us and help us in difficult times, because we have become very weak and poor2 and can’t survive any more suffering. Be gracious to us, Lord. Be gracious to us, because we have been filled with so much shame during exile. Even when You are angry, remember to have mercy on us, in the merit of Abraham, whose name has the same numerical value as the Hebrew word for mercy. When You are angry, remember the binding of Isaac. When You are angry, remember the pure faith of Jacob, who trusted in You even though he had many troubles. When You are angry, remember Your love toward us. Save us, Lord; may the King of the universe answer us on the day we call out to Him. For God knows that we have an evil inclination that leads us to sin; He knows our nature. He remembers that we are nothing more than the dust2 from which our bodies were created. Help us, God of our salvation, for the sake of the honor it will bring to Your name; help us so that Your name will be honored. Rescue us and forgive our sins for the sake of Your name, so that everyone will recognize that You are a forgiving God.

May God’s great name be blessed forever and ever. The name of the Holy One, Who is blessed, will be blessed, celebrated, glorified, exalted, raised, honored, uplifted, and praised (Amen)—

The following paragraph is said on Mondays and Thursdays except when Tachanun is not said.

Our God, Who is slow to get angry and has much kindness and truth, we ask that You do not punish us in Your anger. Lord, have pity on the Jewish Nation, Your people; save us from all bad. We have sinned against You, God, our Master. God, please forgive us according to Your great mercy; forgive us because You have much mercy.
