A festive meal ought to be readied in honor of the circumcision; such a meal is a Seudat Mitzvah. In the Blessing After the Meal, supplementary passages are recited (page 97).
SEQUENCE OF THE REDEMPTION OF A FIRSTBORN SON
It is a mitzvah upon every Israelite to redeem his son who is firstborn to his Israelite mother once thirty days have elapsed from his birth—i.e., on the thirty-first day—with five sela'im. Should he have redeemed him prior to this date, the redemption is invalid and must be repeated at the proper time; should it be later, he has transgressed a positive mitzvah. Five sela'im corresponds to 102 grams of pure silver. This sum may be tendered to the Kohen in silver, or its equivalent in any article save land, servants, or a promissory note owed to the father. Should he have redeemed with any of these, the redemption is invalid.
The father presents the firstborn child before the Kohen, along with five sela'im of silver or its equivalent, and notifies him, by the following declaration, that this child is a firstborn, being the first issue of the womb of his Israelite mother.

Some keep the practice of preparing a meal to honor the redemption of the firstborn son. When wine is present, the ceremony of redemption takes place in the course of the meal, following the blessing over bread, and immediately after the redemption the Kohen recites the blessing over wine. When wine is absent, redemption takes place prior to the meal, and the Kohen recites a blessing over another beverage. This meal is regarded as a Seudat Mitzvah.
