KIDDUSH ON THE EVE OF ROSH HASHANAH
Should Rosh Hashanah fall on Shabbat, quietly say שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם through אַתְקִינוּ... בַּהֲדָהּ (pages 176-178), then begin יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי below.
On Rosh Hashanah’s second night, custom is to set a new fruit [not yet eaten this season] before the one who recites Kiddush; he is to look at it while saying the blessing שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ, intending that it apply to the new fruit as well. If no new fruit is available, he should nevertheless say שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ.
Stand while reciting the Kiddush.
Receive the wine cup in the right hand, shift it to the left hand, and rest it upon the palm of the right hand. (See illustration, page 641.) Hold the cup three tefachim (approximately 9 in.) above the table throughout the Kiddush.
Listeners to the Kiddush ought to answer אָמֵן where indicated. See additional laws on pages 603-604.
Look at the festival candles, then say:
On Shabbat, start here.

From the cup, pour some wine to be given to those listening, and while seated drink at least 2 ounces of the wine that remains.
On Rosh Hashanah’s first night, everyone present washes hands for the meal (see Laws on page 603), saying the proper blessing, taking care not to speak until after partaking of the challah. Holding both loaves, the head of the household recites the blessing for bread and gives a piece to each person, who then recites the blessing over the bread.
On Rosh Hashanah’s first night, custom is to eat a sweet apple dipped in honey at the meal’s start. One should first recite the following blessing:
Hebrew
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָעֵץ:
Chabad
boruch atoh Adonoy, Eloyheinu melech ho-oylom, boyrei p'ri ho-eitz:
Then, prior to tasting the fruit, say:
Hebrew
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶיךָ* שֶׁתְּחַדֵּשׁ* עָלֵינוּ שָׁנָה טוֹבָה וּמְתוּקָה*:
Chabad
y'hi rotzoyn mil'fonecho* shet'chadeish* oleinu shonoh toyvoh um'sukoh*:
On Rosh Hashanah’s second night, the new fruit is eaten at once after Kiddush, prior to washing the hands for bread. Before partaking of the fruit, the blessing of בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָעֵץ (above) is recited (but not יְהִי רָצוֹן). Everyone present then washes hands for the meal, see above.
