Third B’rakhah: the Holiness of God
THE KEDUSHAH
The Kedushah is spoken while standing. Because we echo the angels’ song, custom advises standing as angels do, with feet together. Only with a minyan is it recited.
Israeli
na-aritzcha venakdishcha k'sod siach sarfei kodesh hamakdishim
shimcha bakodesh, kakatuv al yad nevi-echa, vekara zeh El zeh ve-amar:
kadosh, kadosh, kadosh Adonai Tz'va-ot,
melo chol-ha-aretz k'vodo.
English
On earth we honor and hallow You, even as Your name is hallowed in heaven, as Isaiah Your prophet portrayed: Each called to the other: “Holy, holy, holy is Adonai Tz’va·ot; God’s glory fills the whole world!”
Israeli
k'vodo malei olam, mesharetav sho-alim zeh lazeh,
ayeh mekom k'vodo, le-umatam baruch yomeru:
baruch k'vod Adonai mimekomo.
English
Glory of God fills the universe. One choir of angels asks, “Where is the place of God’s glory?” A second answers: “Praised is Adonai’s glory wherever God dwells.”
Israeli
mimekomo hu yifen b'rachamim, veyachon am hameyachadim sh'mo erev
vavoker b'chol-yom tamid, pa-amayim be-ahavah sh'ma omerim:
sh'ma Yisra-el, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad.
English
From the dwelling of God, may God look with compassion upon the people who, twice daily, evening and morning, lovingly declare God’s oneness, saying the Sh’ma: “Hear, O Israel, Adonai is our God, Adonai is one.”
Israeli
hu Eloheinu, hu avinu, hu malkenu, hu moshi-enu,
vehu yashmi-enu b'rachamav shenit le-einei chol-chai,
lihyot lachem leilohim.
ani Adonai Eloheichem.
English
Our God is the Holy One, our maker, our sovereign, our redeemer. Once more, in mercy, God will declare to us before all the living: “I, Adonai, am your God.”
Israeli
uvdivrei kodshcha katuv leimor:
yimloch Adonai le-olam, Elohayich Tziyon ledor vador, haleluyah.
English
In the psalmist’s song: “Forever shall Adonai reign; your God, O Zion, from generation to generation. Halleluyah!”
Israeli
ledor vador nagid godlecha, ulenetzach netzachim k'dushatcha nakdish,
veshivchacha Eloheinu mipinu lo yamush le-olam va-ed,
ki El melech gadol vekadosh atah.
English
We shall proclaim Your greatness from age to age, and with holy words we shall forever hallow You. Praise of You will never depart our lips, for You, great and holy, are God and Sovereign.
Israeli
baruch atah Adonai, ha-El hakadosh.
English
Barukh atah Adonai, the sacred God.
On Shabbat Shuvah we use instead:
Israeli
baruch atah Adonai, hamelech hakadosh.
English
Barukh atah Adonai, the sacred Sovereign.
On the next page we continue with the Fourth B’rakhah, “You established Shabbat.”
