For the conductor of music. A psalm of David. May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of Jacob's God protect you. May He send you help from the Sanctuary and support from Zion. May He remember all your meal-offerings and accept your burnt-offerings, Selah! May He give you your heart's desire and make all your plans succeed. We will shout for joy at Your salvation and lift a banner in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests. Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He answers him from His holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, others in horses, but we call on the name of the LORD our God. They were brought to their knees and fell, but we rose up and stood firm. LORD, save! May the King answer us on the day we call.

In a house of mourning and on Tisha B'Av omit the verse beginning "As for Me" and continue with "You are the Holy One."

And they receive permission from one another, saying: "Holy in the highest heavens, home of His Presence; holy on earth, the work of His strength; holy for ever and all time is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His radiant glory."

Commentary

וְאַתָּה קָדוֹשׁ You are the Holy One: the third and final Kedusha of the morning service, known as Kedusha deSidra. Here, it is incorporated into an act of study. Hence the verses of the Kedusha are followed by their Aramaic translations and expansions (Aramaic was for a long time the language of study).

לַמְנַצֵּחַ Psalm 20: A prayer for protection from harm. As prayer reaches its close, and we prepare to reenter the outside world with its hazards and dangers, we ask God to keep us from harm. Because of the solemnity of its mood, this psalm is omitted on festivals or in a house of mourning, so as not to subtract from the joy of the former, or add to the grief of the latter.

וּבָא לְצִיּוֹן גּוֹאֵל A redeemer will come to Zion: These two verses (from Isaiah), are all that remain of the ancient custom of studying prophetic texts after prayer.
