And so it was, when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, which was near; for He said, “The people may change their minds when they see battle, and return to Egypt.” So God led the people round about, by way of the wilderness of the Sea of Reeds; it was armed that the children of Israel ascended from the land of Egypt. And Moses carried the bones of Joseph with him, for [Joseph] had adjured the children of Israel, saying: “When God redeems you, you must take my bones up with you from this place.” *They journeyed from Sukkot and encamped at Etam, at the edge of the wilderness. And the LORD went before them: by day in a pillar of cloud to show them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire to illuminate their path, so that they might walk by day and by night. Never did the pillar of cloud depart from before the people by day, nor the pillar of fire at night. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to the children of Israel; they must turn back and encamp near Pi HaḤirot, between Migdol and the sea, before Ba’al Tzefon; it is opposite this place that you shall encamp, alongside the sea. Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel: ‘They are lost in the land: the wilderness has shut them in.’ And I shall strengthen Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will be glorified through Pharaoh and all of his hosts; all of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD.” And they did as [God had commanded]. *Word reached the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the hearts of Pharaoh and his servants changed with regard to the people. They said, “What is it that we have done, releasing the Israelites from servitude to us?” He harnessed his chariot and took his men along with him: six hundred choice chariots he took, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. The LORD strengthened the heart of Pharaoh, King of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel as they went out with an uplifted hand. *The Egyptians pursued them and overtook them while they were encamped at the sea – all of Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and army – at Pi HaḤirot, opposite Ba’al Tzefon. As Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel raised their eyes and they saw: all of Egypt was marching
