I shall be gracious to whom I shall be gracious; I shall be merciful to whom I shall be merciful. *He said: You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live. The LORD said: Behold, there is a place near Me, where you can stand upon the rock. When My glory passes, I shall put you in the rock's cave, and cover you with My palm until I pass. Then I shall remove My palm and you shall see My back, but My face may not be seen. The LORD said to Moses: Carve out two stone tablets for yourself, like the first ones, and I will inscribe on them the same words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. No one shall go up with you, nor shall anyone be seen anywhere on the mountain; even the sheep and cattle may not graze in front of that mountain. *So he carved out two stone tablets like the first ones; Moses arose early in the morning and walked up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, taking in his hand the two stone tablets. The LORD descended in a cloud, and stood with him there; and proclaimed in the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him and proclaimed: “The LORD, the LORD, compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in loving-kindness and truth, extending loving-kindness to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion and sin, and absolving [the guilty who repent]; He shall not absolve [those who do not repent], but shall visit the punishment of fathers’ sins upon their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.” And Moses hastened to bow to the ground, prostrating himself. He said: “O LORD, if I find favor in Your eyes, please, let the LORD go forth in our midst, for this is a stiff-necked people; forgive us our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance.” He said: “Behold, I will forge a covenant: in the presence of your entire people I will work wonders like none ever formed in all the world or for any nation; this people among whom you dwell shall witness the works of the LORD, for what I will do for you is
